View Full Version : What Color Top Should I Get?
criddell Nov 22nd, 06, 04:54 PM My 69 is midnight blue with dark silver/gray stripes. I am obviously not going for an all original restoration. I've considered black and a dark blue that matches the car's paint. What would you do?

BPOS Nov 22nd, 06, 05:29 PM Nice car. I vote black.
77thor Nov 22nd, 06, 05:31 PM +1. Black.
sleepsinshed Nov 22nd, 06, 05:32 PM I wouldn't add a third color. I think a blue to match the paint, or a gray to match the stripes would look great. Hold my hand to the fire and I'd probably go with the gray. Nice car!
cfauver Nov 22nd, 06, 06:08 PM gray first, then black, blue would be impossible to match and would fade.
67pat Nov 22nd, 06, 07:42 PM I like the gray idea too...then black.
bigblockpace Nov 25th, 06, 11:23 PM I vote blue as well!
bills69 Nov 26th, 06, 06:48 AM go with a cloth top, that would be real sharp
1967rsssconv Nov 26th, 06, 07:02 AM if you want it to look fresh for a long timego for a cloth top in black
JimM Nov 26th, 06, 07:15 AM I wouldn't add a third color either and would go with gray.
69TAPoser Nov 26th, 06, 07:26 AM I vote black, but wonder if there are pics of gray out their in this color combo to see what it could look like? It may look stunning in gray but it is hard for me to visualize it. If it were my car, my concern would be it looking too "Lincoln Town Car." Black is a "safe" bet.
Maybe you can get someone to photoshop both colors on a similar colored car to get an idea?
Phil
DjD Nov 26th, 06, 10:08 AM I've seen a blue that would be a good blend between your blue and silver/grey and think it would look real good.
POCKER Nov 26th, 06, 06:40 PM PINK.
Just kiding. I vote black.
erik67ssrs Nov 26th, 06, 06:44 PM Gray. Don't add a third color.
Rocketrod Nov 26th, 06, 09:04 PM I'd go with black since the top would be down all the time anyway.
Everett#2390 Nov 27th, 06, 04:52 AM Nice ride, ready to go, steering wheel & seat are there.
I'd ask if anyone local or otherwise, does a blue to match. If not, then go black.
Car nut Nov 27th, 06, 06:31 PM Black would be ok but, I remember a pepper "black & grey stayfast cloth" . That would be different and may look hot. Do the boot too. Go to a top place and put samples next to the car and you will know. Brian
camaromaniac Nov 28th, 06, 12:01 AM This is such a big decision on such a beautiful car, I would take some pics of the car with the present top up, put them on my pc and color in the top to see which color works the best for you. My vote would be a gray that matches the stripes----- but I wouldn't do it without a preview. Charlie
327!275hp!Convt! Nov 28th, 06, 03:10 PM I **K N O W** what color top goes with best your paint job; because I had a paint job just like it a few years ago. The car was ripped-off. Get a DARK BLUE CLOTH top. When I did this on my 68 rally sport, it transformed to car like more than you might imagine. A vinyl top will look silly. The cloth will add allot of class & look coooool & rich. I got the idea from a guy who owns a big ole restoration shop. I think maybe he got the idea from the porsche convertible. I'm telling you man, that dark blue cloth top with midnight blue paint is a hard combo to beat.
KevinK7 Nov 29th, 06, 05:49 AM ...Great looking car, ...I've vote for a dark BLUE cloth top
redfox Nov 29th, 06, 11:40 AM I would go with a black top.
1967rsssconv Nov 30th, 06, 10:41 AM hi i hope you dont mind , but im ready to do my top too, its got a white deluxe interior , and a dark blue pearl body what color for me im concidering both white in factory vinyl or black in cloth , thanks for your input , and i hope i dont upset anyone for asking , chris
Pacecarjeff Nov 30th, 06, 02:47 PM What color top is the car suposed to have?
Go with the color on the trim tag.
That way if you ever decide to go back to original configuration --
It will be one less thing you will have to buy.
Or, one less thing the new owner will have to fix.
Just my opinion. ;)
Dot Nov 30th, 06, 04:11 PM What color is the interior. If it is black, I'd go with black.
If you want to go with the blue top to match the paint color, that would work as well.
Love the paint color you chose.
327!275hp!Convt! Nov 30th, 06, 06:51 PM 1967RSSSconv-dude,
Since your car isn't as dark as midnight blue, you already have a white nose & interior, go with a white top. If your car is the original paint color & interior, I'll bet it came factory with a white top. The white top will blend well with the rest of the car because the nose stripe is there to help pull it all together.Your car is very similar to mine. I have blue interior with white accents in the deluxe interior. I'm going with a white top but, I'm going to add Z28 stripes to pull the top & blue paint together. Otherwise, the white top jumps out too much against the blue body paint IMO. I used to hate my white top until I saw a freshly restored duplicate of my car at a camaro restoration shop. When I saw this guys car, it made me really appreciate my white top for the very first time. The white Z28 stripes pulling the white top down into the blue paint make all the difference in the world.
overhaulin1 Nov 30th, 06, 09:22 PM I have a blue top on my silver with blue stripes. The top is not color friendly. Go with Black, as I am going to re-do.
DjD Nov 30th, 06, 10:06 PM The top is not color friendly.
What does that mean? From the pic in your sig I can't imagine your car looking better with a black top.
1967rsssconv Dec 1st, 06, 04:11 AM my car came as a marroon car with white deluxe , white b/b stripe and white top,it is a real ss/rr 396 4sp, but is not a # matching car now 383 t400 still matching rear
overhaulin1 Dec 2nd, 06, 10:36 PM I have to repaint it due to severe clear coat cracking (ebay car). Its going to be silver with black stripes. The blue top just doesnt do it for me, and it limits my colors. l changed the interior to black and white (from blue). But, a nice blue with silver stripes would be awesome too!
Thanks, that maks sense with respect to a repaint and color change.
T-Torden Dec 5th, 06, 10:05 AM Gray would be perfect.

Anyone know where to buy a green top??

criddell Dec 5th, 06, 10:35 PM Wow, I've been travelling and did not realize I'd gotten so many great responses to my question. This site is incredible. After much consideration, and consulting with my wife, I decided to go with a high-quality canvas fabric dark blue top. Yes, I've admired that color combo on Porsches. My interior is black leather, so the boot will need to match. Gray was an interesting suggestion, but in the end I found a really good looking blue. My uphostery top guy was really in favor of the blue as well. And yes, the top will be down most of the time anyway. Thanks again everyone.
overhaulin1 Dec 8th, 06, 01:27 PM As pviously mentioned, the blue WILL fade slightly and the one I have would not blend with your blue. It doesnt even blend with mine very well (I know it looks good in the pic, but it snot that close). I would DEFINATELY go gray with those colors. IMHO

I had a high-quality canvas top (dark blue) with a midnight blue paint job. After 3 years of the top going up & down, up & down, on a daily driver, the top still looked new. People would even ask me sometimes if the top was new. This car was NOT in a garage most of the time. It was in the Texas & California sun.
overhaulin1 Dec 10th, 06, 07:40 PM How did u keep the plastic from scuffing?
327!275hp!Convt! Dec 10th, 06, 08:38 PM How did u keep the plastic from scuffing?
If you're asking me this question, I didn't DO anything. I don't remember scuffing showing up on the back window. People weren't looking so much at the rear window as they were the dark blue canvas top with the midnight blue paint. It looks a good bit better (this color combo) in person than what we can see in photos. Photos make the paint & top look almost black. In real life, in the sunlight, that's where it looks very cool.

Check my posts in this thread. All you do is take care of it if you want it to last...
