I am not a pro but I do get very good results, heres what I use.
I color sand with 2000 grit wet paper, no circles just straight directions. Then I use a fine cut rubbing compound on a wool pad, then I use Meguires no.83 polishing compound on a foam pad at low speed. After all that use a good glazing compound to remove swirls.
3Ms finesse-it system works very well if you can get it in your area.
Hope I helped a little.
