i am doing a floorboard patch ,the "toe-heel" area on the passenger side,ok i cut out the rusty area ,and i have a toe heel patch piece cut to fit(butt weld)but it is to short insome areas,i seen where you can hold a piece of copper underneath the area and weld to fill in small gaps, the gaps i am talking about are less than eighth inch ,does the copper really work for this? or should i locate another patch and do the overlap method, any suggestions would be great, thanks

That will work. Just start welding on the area that are butted tightly first. Then fill the gaps, just make sure you let the welds cool down every now and then to prevent excessive warping.
