: Headliner Installation Continued

Does anyone have a link for the headliner installation or pix that show step by step progress? The Fisher Body Manual is little help. It basically says put the wires in, glue the sides and you're done. I'm a little more simple. Once the wires are in (I'm there) how do you proceed. I know you should glue the rear center and work your way to the edges but is there anything that holds the headliner tight while the glue sets? How far down the rear window does the headliner extend on the sides. Does the sail panel go under the rear pinchweld or only butt against it? Obviously, I have lots of questions and would like to get it right the first time.:clonk:

I will be doing this myself real soon. I've done some research and found Stingr69 has a detailed post on the install. A lot of people have used the heavy duty paper clips that he mentions with great results. They say its the key to getting the headliner tight. Here's the link I found:

Run a form search, there are some very good threads on the subject...
Thu my advise, if u are as unsure as u are, throw a professional a few beers and let him do it.

Bob, before applying any glue, get some of those black binder clips at staples. Pull all edges out and clip them in to where they would be glued to. Let it sit for a day or 2 then go back in stretch out any wrinkles you might have. Let it sit again, then remove 1/2 a side at a time (the clips) and start gluing and re applying the clips. This worked for me (warm weather helps too)

Thanks for the help. I read about the black binder clips after I posted my thread and will get them today. I still have questions about the area behind/around the sail panel. Are there any tack strips involved? The Fisher Manual is kind of genaric since its for all Chevy's and it mentions tack strips but there aren't any in the car. Does the sail go under the pinch weld along the rear window?

Bob, the area where a tack strip would be is a metal bar that runs accross horizontally under where the sail panel goes. Just glue the headliner to that (using the clips) tucking a little of the material under/behind it. Mine pulled nice and tight there, no tacks needed. As far as the sail panel to rear pinch welds, (if memory serves me correct), it goes on top of it (the fabric, not the cardboard material) and is pinched on it with the rear plastic molding. Hope this helps.

Thanks Tom. I suspected there might be a tack strip (metal bar) running behing the sail panel. There appears to be screw holes on each side of an opening in that area. Those strips are gone on my car and I haven't seen any source for them. Since glue will hold and tacks aren't needed I think I'll just make a metal bar to go there. Right now, without it, I can't get metal clips into that area to stretch the headliner. :)

I took out and reinstalled my headliner many years ago and it went fine but what I regret was leaving out the cardboard insulation. It now sounds like I'm in a tin can when it rains. Just thought I'd pass this along.
