Thanks in advance for taking the time & energy to help me. This is a pre X code car that I would like to get a breakdown of all the codes. I would also like to determine if it is a true RS and what numbers should be on the engine block (casting number and front pad stamp) in order to be numbers matching/original to the car motor? Thanks, Charlie

The partial VIN code stamped on the block should be 19N508429. Based on the sequence number, your car was built sometime during September, 1968.

Actually, my read of the decoding is that the car DOES have paint code. "55" indicates Azure Turquoise. The "D" indicates a vinyl roof or convertible top color, but I couldn't figure out which color.

I don't think there are any stamps that verify the car was an original RS. I would just look at the headlight door mechanisms, vacuum lines and valves to see if they look original or new.

A good book for decoding is Chevrolet by the Numbers, by Alan L. Colvin.

Hope this helps.

RS cars will also have the rear back-up lights under the bumper. Remove one to see if it was stamped at the factory. Also check the tail light housings to see if it has the center hole in it. real RS housings only have 2 holes. The wiper motor will also have a extra solonoid on it for the headlight washers. most people forget this piece when converting a STD to RS
