: Lower steering column collar for 69?
Eric Kammerer Dec 6th, 06, 12:25 PM I have my 69 column completely disassembled for rebuild. On the inner jacket for the key lockout feature, the Fisher diagram shows what it called a "jacket collar" that goes over the lower end of the inside lockout jacket tube and seals the space between the inner tube and the outer column tube.
My jacket collar is completely disintegrated. I have the two rings, but there's nothing between them any more. I searched but couldn't find an answer: is there a replacement for this collar?
Brian Lewis Dec 6th, 06, 03:15 PM I think you might need a new lower bearing assembly, this is held in by the metal clip at the bottom of the column, see :

JIML82 Dec 7th, 06, 06:06 AM The following instructions will take you to a websight with a number of papers on Camaro and Chevelle steering. You will find specific papers on the 1969 through 1976 steering columns (both standard (non-adjustable) and the tilt columns). BTW, the lower ends of either column are identical.
Even though it is located at the Corvettefaq.com websight, there is a separate steering section just for Camaros and Chevelles (A and F-cars).
Go to www.corvettefaq.com
Click on section labeled; Jim Shea's Steering Papers.
Click on A and F-car Steering Papers in the right column.
Scroll down to the proper paper(s).

Thanks, but that's not quite it. Here's the steering column diagram for Camaro from the 69 Fisher Service Manual (that should make it come up in a search, I guess):

The lower bearing and adapter are Nos. 43 and 40, respectively. What I need is the jacket collar, No. 36. I also need the wave washer, No. 30.
z28station Dec 7th, 06, 10:55 AM Contact me about 69 camaro column parts.I just dissassembled some old columns because they were not worth trying to have rebuilt and have several used parts for them. Please let me know.Contact me at zstation@bellsouth.net

If the washer on the right in the upper photo sits on top of the white plastic "housing bearing" in the diagram, that's the one I don't have. I haven't seen one, so I'm not sure. I guess I'm not sure what it even does. If it just makes it easier to rotate the housing to activate the reverse lights and get the key out, I may not need it. My TKO has a reverse lamp switch on it, so I won't be using a column mounted switch. My column will stay rotated to the position where I can get the key out, and that's it.
In the lower photo, what I need is the collar that is above the lever for the lockout lever. It looks like there is something there in your column, and mine just has two thin rings and a deteriorated cloth looking band around the shift tube. My guess is that the collar I am looking for helps keep underhood fumes from coming in up the column, so I am hoping to find one or find some other way to seal it without compromising the collapsibility of the column in a crash.
Run269 Dec 8th, 06, 01:38 PM you mean this white plastic "housing bearing" piece? it centers the top of the shift tube in the column i think, and yes i think i showed you the correct wave washer for that. it preloads the tube so it doesn't rattle up and down.

as far as a seal i vaguely remember cutting a piece of cheapo weatherstrip (like you would use for a door in your house) and wrapping/sticking it around the column near the bottom to seal out the fumes.
Eric Kammerer Dec 11th, 06, 09:50 AM Because I am not worried about my column's shift tube rotating freely (only need it to stay in the position which allows me to get the ignition key out), can anyone think of a reason I couldn't use 3M Strip Calk for the lower seal?? My thinking is that would seal well, and should not compromise the ability to collapse in a crash.
