When you re-install the rear spoiler after painting should the bolt holes be sealed with some type of sealant to keep water from coming through them? When I had my car painted I noticed when the body shop removed the spoiler there was RTV sealer or some type of weather stripping glue around the bolt holes.

The body shop did not like the way the spoiler turned out so they asked me to remove it and bring it back to them. When they get it repainted I am taking my car back over for them to re-install it. Should I have them put sealer around the bolts?

I thought the spoiler looked good and if the tech hadn't pointed out the very small flaw I probably would have never noticed it. It has a very small nick that was not filled before it was painted so they want to redo it. This body shop took a long time but they really seem to want to make sure it is done right. They told me when I brought the car back over they were going to inpect it real close.

oh, BTW when the spoiler is off be very careful when unlocking the trunk, the lid comes up very fast! graemlins/clonk.gif

Yes, the fasteners should be sealed. The holes could provide the elements a path inside to the trunk.

I used a wad, bubble gum size, of butyl sealer on the washer face before adding the nut from the inside of the lid.

Dan, Get some dum dum. It stays plyable and fills in the gaps around the holes nicely. Hope to see you guys next spring at any show that we can. Jim

I had a small leak into my trunk and figgered that it was the spoiler holes. What I ended up doing was looking through my plumbing nuts bolts and washers. I found some large rubber washers, the type that you seal a toilet tank to the bowl. Then I used a little clear RTV to hold them up while I fished the bolts through the trunk lid. Then I used stainless washers and nylock nuts to hold the spoiler down. No more leaks into the trunk and I got caught in a heck of a storm at a show earlier this year.

Rope style auto caulk (dum dum). Great for many ills and minor squeaks.
