This guy just bought some camaro parts from me from my pace car resto. He claims to have this engine code and I cant figure out the last six numbers after NOR?
STR69 12467NOR308059
Z11
Some one told him it was a 427?

Phil thats not an engine code. Thats the body build sequence number off the cowl tag (trim tag), it only shows interior or exterior color info and body style (coupe or convertible) The Z11 means Pace car. The Pace Cars NEVER came with a 427. Only a small number of 396's were built. The engine block should have a number stamped on the pad behind the alternator that extends outward from under the valve cover with a partial vin and engine code number that would tell you what the engine is but its NOT a Pace Car engine.
Welcome to Team Camaro too :)

Thanks for the quick response and Welcome!
Well thats what i had thought...Since he claimed it was decoded with a 427 I thought I was missing something?
He doesnt have the original engine, nor the protecto Plate, is there any other way to determine what size engine it came with?
Its sounds like its a molested basket case. He bought at an aucton of a deceased owner over ten years ago. He no idea what he had until a couple of years ago..
I forgot to ask him if he had the tranny which would of been one clue?
You mentioned that a partial code is on the forward plate so the other is behind the engine on the driver side, and you need both to confirm the matching numbers?

Only a small number of 396's [Z11's] were built.
Define small. My estimates are between 15-20%, or approximately 550 to 735 cars.

Sorry :) smaller compared to total of 700+. But even 20% is small compared to 80% ;)

There will only be one number on the engine, not 2. There are 2 hidden partial VIN numbers on the car, one below the passenger side wiper inside the cowl area, and another on the firewall adjacent to where the heater blower motor mounts. Pretty hard to see that one without the fender off and fan motor off.
Only other way to know original engine size is a broadcast sheet. If it had been a Los Angeles built car, it might have been on top of the gas tank. But since its a norwood car, that evidence is probably gone at the factory. A dealer invoice or window sticker would show it but I doubt anyone saved those either.

the heater box will tell you if it is a BB or a SB car ...
