View Full Version : Muncie Mounting Help
ironhorse78247 Dec 10th, 06, 12:07 PM I have a 68 coupe that is in the process of a frame off restoration and I bought a 1970 Muncie M20 to use in this car. I have an aftermarket bellhousing, clutch and pressure plate that I installed with no problems. The aftermarket transmission mount will not line up with the holes in the crossmember. They are about 1/2 inch too far forward. Then crossmember is mounted correctly and I am pretty sure it is the correct crossmember for the setup I have. The mounting holes for the Muncie shifter are in the correct place and the shifter mounted up fine without any problem.
Also, the driveshaft yoke sticks out of the rear of the transmission about two inches when the driveshaft is mounted.
Has anyone run into this problem? I can't bolt the transmission to the crossmember.
eville Dec 10th, 06, 12:33 PM did you swap engines? If you didn't change the engine/frame stands the motor could be in the wrong location....
ironhorse78247 Dec 10th, 06, 03:43 PM This car did not have an engine in it. I installed a 1970 350 engine. I bought and installed new reproduction frame mounts from NPD and they are for a Chevy small block, 67-68. It seems as if the motor is sitting too far forward but I can't see how this could be.
SixtyAte Dec 10th, 06, 04:17 PM Are the frame mounts reversed? Is the transmission cross member in properly?
Hummm strange...
Kev
ironhorse78247 Dec 10th, 06, 04:21 PM The frame mounts were labeled left and right and they are mounted accordingly and the transmission crossmember is installed correctly, as the Muncie shifter mounts to it and there are no mounting holes for the shifter on the opposite side of the crossmember. The crossmember was bought separately off of eBay, but I am reasonably sure that it is for a 68 Camaro.
mikes69z Dec 10th, 06, 04:22 PM Sounds like the bellhousing or crossmember is ka ka. :-) It's a stock crossmember? Stock height bellhousing?
ironhorse78247 Dec 10th, 06, 04:48 PM It's a stock crossmember, I think. The bellhousing is aftermarket.
JOE58 Dec 11th, 06, 09:03 AM sure you have a small block cross member and not a big block cross member?
mikes69z Dec 11th, 06, 10:25 AM time to take some measuremements :-)
TJS69 Dec 11th, 06, 12:58 PM On your engine frame mounts - Which side are you saying is left and which is right ? Left should be on the driver's side and right is on the passenger side. Correct ?
ironhorse78247 Dec 11th, 06, 02:29 PM That is correct, left is drivers side and right is passengers side. The left side mount still has a sticker on it identifying it as the left side frame mount.
Is there any difference in the left and right side motor mounts?
ironhorse78247 Dec 12th, 06, 05:07 AM Hey Mike69Z, do you have any suggestions as to what I should measure and what the measurements should be. I am stumped as to why this thing will not line up. Everything seems to be as it should be.
ironhorse78247 Dec 12th, 06, 05:13 AM According to CRG ( http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml#Crossmembers), this is a SBC crossmember. It has the oval opening for the transmission mounting bolts.
TJS69 Dec 12th, 06, 05:15 AM Does your Driveshaft fit ?
ironhorse78247 Dec 12th, 06, 05:19 AM Not exactly. The yoke on the end sticks out of the tailhousing about two inches. This is more than I would like.
TJS69 Dec 13th, 06, 10:36 AM Some repro. frame stands have been giving people problems. Do a search, and you might find an answer.
