: I got the shakes

Just went down to get my car inspected over the weekend and noticed at 2500 rpm's in 4th ( 4 spd) everything shakes like crazy and the car pulls to the left. I got into it to see if it would stop but it wouldn't and it was kind of loose and scary. Also, I let a friend drive it home so I could see it from behind and noticed the right rear wheel looks to be wobbling, would this be an axle issue or something worse?

Yes it could be a bad rear axle however the best place to start is change the rim and tire first! It could be a bent rim or a bad tire .

is it only in 4th gear? if so it could be your pilot bushing.

How would I check the pilot bushing or the rim and tire? The tire and rim should be balanced.

Well check the odvious lug nuts ,jack the car up and yank on the wheel ,maybe bad c clip, there will be a little side movement less than 1/16 aprox.Loose a c clip lose a wheel and wrose yet your car goes down on the quarter panel. I have run c clip elimanator kit's for yrs. on all my 10 and 12 bolt just cause cheap compaired to quarter panel damage ,I don't think so but cover all base's,did you hit a curb to bend wheel ,did you just buy the car and notice the problem, now that I wrote all this ,is it just in 4th gear...hope helps ...Happy Motoring

Only 4th, I can do 5000 rpm in any other gear, I think it is at a certain speed (~55 mph, I don't have my speedo hooked up). No curb damage, I have only driven it 2 other times at that speed and no problems.

The right rear wheel wobbling ??? only in 4 th gear...I am lost ,I would think that must be a septrate issue, pilot bushing ,I can only comment on problems I have been through ,through out my 30 yrs of being a muscle car guy .I will think about it and, will try to call my buddy thats got a tranny shop but you will get some good answer's here Good luck .Happy Motoring 67chef,I have been thinking about and talked to my buddy and 4th gear you are going stright through the tranny 1 to 1, and it would be doing it in other gears ,he thinks its not your tranny so pilot bushing came up, clutch ,drive line, u joints ,lost a wheel weight. Good luck, let us know.

If you think it may be the tire or rim. Swap it over to the drivers side and retest to see if wobble moves to the other side.

Is there a way to test the rim and tire off of the car for trueness?

IF the rim is bent you are most likely only going to notice it at higher speeds..ie moving along in 4th gear. I had a bent rim on an older car once and it was only noticable above 55mph. Easiest way would be to take it to a tire place and have them put it on a balancer and they can spin it and tell you if its bent. Also as someone mentioned make sure lug nuts are tight.

How old are the tires? I had a sidewall separate once that caused this kind of problem. I also suggest you take the tire and rim to a tire place. They can tell you if it spins true or not.

Tires and rims are new with about 100 miles on them. I'll take it to a shop and see what I can find out.
