  I have a 69 pro-street camaro that has been in the family for 30 yrs. This car was my deceased father and now I am lucky enough to still have the car. Here is my issue...about 6 mos. ago I had the car out to a show and ran out of gas on my way home. To make a long story short, I ended up frying my distributor in the process. I had the car rollbacked home and dropped into my garage off the truck. It is now 6 mos. later and I have just finished installing a msd box, msd dist.wires. The car runs great but the clutch is not engaging at all. The petal has pressure but when the car is started i cannot get the car in gear!!!! I have been told that it is a possibility that the hayes clutch has frozen to the flywheel. I have never had these issues before..the clutch does not have many miles on it. ANy help????

Just drop the trans out and take a look , most of the time you will see whats wrong with the eye,,sounds like the springs in the clutch plate has busted.

man..i have never messed with anything like that....my father passed when i was 18..i helped build the car but i was just a helper...you know.."pass me that wrench..." I was hoping to get this into the suspension shop for air ride shockwaves yesterday, but unforeseen problems...yesterday would have been the old man's b-day. The susp. would have been a nice b-day present to him.

I am not sure what exactly i am looking for here. The tranny is the stock 4-spd. w/ hayes clutch

Instructions to loosen clutch, maybe:
DO NOT START THE ENGINE
Sit in driver seat.
Disengaged clutch by pressing down on clutch pedal and hold it there.
Place transmission into 4th gear.
Apply brakes by stepping hard on brake pedal.
Engage starter for a second.

Hopefully, the starter will have broken loose the clutch disc from the flywheel. You can see if it did by starting the engine and engaging a gear normally. If the gear meshing creates a noise, then another attempt may be needed, maybe a longer second in cranking.

The reason the clutch froze to the flywheel is because it rusted together. Due to hot/cold cycling, condensation formed between the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch disc and the parts rusted together. The aftermarket clutch disc is either semi-metallic or metallic disc and it has steel fibers in it as well. Steel rusts.

I would look into getting the car driving again before i sent it to get air ride installed,,just get the tools out and go at it!! start by putting the car up on 4 jack stands ,, 1st remove the dist. cap then remove the drive shaft, drop the e brake cables out of the way,, disconnect the speedo cable then remove the shifter, place a small bottle jack under the bellhousing,,then take out the 4 bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing,,remove the crossmember and slide the trans out of the bellhousing,, after the trans is out ,,lower the bottle jack and get it out of the way,,remove the clutch linkage, then remove the bolts holding the bellhousing to the engine,,remove it now your at the flywheel clutch assy. remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel let one of the top bolts be the last to take out,,and have a hand on the pressure plate before removing the last bolt cause its going to come off and its not lite,, inspect everything close i bet you will see the problem,,you might want to remove the flywheel and get it surfaced,,look in the end of the crankshaft and inspect the poilt bearing if its wore replace it.be sure to locktight the flywheel bolts and torque them if you remove the flywheel. When buy the new clutch assy it should come with a line up shaft,, if not ask for one at the parts store, as you put the clutch and pressure plate back on get all the bolts started in the pressure with a little locktight on them too, place the line up shaft thru the clucth until its fully into the poilt bearing, torque the pressure plate bolts and put it all back in the reverse order that it came apart,, Hope this helps you some,,Bet Dad would be proud to see you turning the wrenches on it now!!!

thanks for the help...this car means the world to me and i am very cautious about letting anyone work on it. It is a 671 blown 27k orig. miles car. My dad was terminally ill w/ lupus and this car was built on b-day/x-mas gifts. I want to keep up the tradition. I want to see his car in another magazine...hasn't been since 1994..before that it was in 13. i am going to try this out today. If anyone knows of a trusted mechanic in cincy or dayton, oh areas, i would love to check them out.

Hi Dads,,, Im moving this thread to the Tranny section where you posted the same question. Our policy is that we ask that you only post once in the proper section to better allow future searches to work and for folks to find it for follow up replies.
Good luck, you got some good advice here.

Dad's ( how about a name ?? )

My 73 Z-28 used to do that if it sat for more than a month or so. I used to roll it out to the street, start it up and get it good and warmed up, then shut it off. Put it in first gear and then start it up. The car will start and move down the street. Then just push the clutch in and slam on the brakes. It WILL break it loose. If you are not real good driving a stick, then let someone with some experience do it, but it will work.

i learned to drive a stick at 11...that sounds fun...at least i get to hear that blower whine while its sitting in the garage:beers: I have just been pretending it is a driving simulator....today is the day where i call the towtruck to come and pull it out of the basement garage. This has been the biggest obstacle. Up a hill coming out of the garage. I do live on a hill so i will just lert that babay roll down the street and see what happens. Thanks guys. I don't have a big garage so doing tranny work in there is virtually impossible. I can't even get a creeper beside my car when it is in there. I hope i can get this done today and go smoke some cobras....I tried to run from light to light with a new saleen a few months back at a light but i think he was scarede of this beast :boxing:

i did try bumping the starter quite a few times yesterday...no luck. I don't have that much room on either isde of garage so doing this is a little scary with a 650 hp blower motor. she wants to jump way too far. But i did attempt with no luck.

Basement garage, could you place a little 1500-2000 watt space heater to keep the humidity low?

Dads

Put the rear of the car saftely on jack stands. Start the car and let the engine warm up. Stop the car then put it in first gear and restart it. With the engine on a fast idle (about 1800 or so) push the clutch to the floor, While the clutch is depressed, jab the brake pedal firmly but not as to stall the engine. The warm flywheel and a couple of jabs should do it. Just make sure the car is safetly on the stands. If this doesn't work you'll have to take it apart.
Good Luck.

or tow it out of the garage so you have room to get more radical with it, safely.
