OK,

Just bought another 70Z. Forest Green, green interior. The car got here (the last owner drove it from Atlanta to me here in New Orleans!) and for a change, actually looked better than in the photos. 66k miles, gobs and gobs of paperwork to back it up, and literally, not a scratch on her. Everything works, down to the clock and the cigarette lighter. Only negative thing is the heads/solid lifters were changed out at some point, everything else is stock but the headers. Original block/water pump/alt/distrib. Original TH400.

So, in the paperwork I see phone numbers from some of the previous owners. Guy I bought it from was the third owner and had it for 2 years. I start calling the previous owner once removed. He has a mechanics shop in Ithica, NY. Nice guy, says he bought the car from a friend, who bought the car new at the chevy dealership where he(first owner) worked as a mechanic.

I ask about why the solid lifters and heads were changed. He stated that the original owner got married and the wife complained about how "loud" the Z was, so he removed them. He bought the car when the orig owner and his wife divorced. BUT, he knows the guy that bought the heads from the original owner. That guy also has a repair shop in Ithica, NY. So he gives me that guys number with a promise to send him some pics. He owned the car for many years.

I call that shop, and the guy says the heads are long gone, BUT, just so happens, that the ORIGINAL OWNER IS AT THE SHOP! Man, what are the odds? So, the original owner and I start to chat. He also wants some pics. He confirms the heads/lifters/cam change. He starts reminising(sp) on how the forest green looked different in the paint chip then in person, and how he almost refused the car when he saw the color.

Now, for the LH Skyhook question:

He tells me that the car has a 70 only special option. Can't remember the name, but states that if you put the tranny in low1 for a drag race, floor it, the TH400 will "automatically" shift to low2 when the tach redlines. However, you still need to shift it to low3 at "Oh, around 90 or so". Claims the only thing that could beat him back in the day was a local 70 Cuda.
I have not heard of this and was wondering if he was pulling my leg. You know, the "Go get me a left handed skyhook" kind of thing. I promised to send him some pics, and he promised to look for the original set of keys that he thinks he still has.

So, here I am wondering if I had the B@ll's to try this on a 60k original car. What the heck? Right? If you can't have fun, what's the point.

I take her out on a deserted road about an hour ago, and from a stop, in L1, punch it. Sure enough, at 6300, she shifts to L2 on her own!

So, am I in the dark? What was this called, and was it standard on the 70 Z's, or an RPO option? Either way, it's Coooooolllll!

I dont think it's a secret option. I believe it is normal for the TH400 to up shift in low to save the trans and engine. I had one and found this out also. I think it is normal operation of the trans.

It's the old TH 400 governor shift. I have one in my 37 Chev Cpe. that came in my Grandpa's 68 Impala that gov shifts about 6300 rpm.

True it is normal of a th400 and a 700r4 to shift to 2nd gear,,theres a way it can be made to hold low gear and not change on its on.

The truck OD automatics will start out in 2nd if you place the shifter there but I have never seen a 700r4 shift out of 1st if the shifter was in 1st... The lock-up convert will make it seem like each gear is really 2 and you may think it's shifting when the converter locks...

Either way. I had never heard of it. Way Cool. Old guy said that it was killer at the track too, consistent shifts.

Cool Story Rich.
Just dont forget to put the shifter into 2nd gear position, other wise you eat the windshield coming back down in rpm,s. LMAO. I used to do that alot in my 77 454 Short Box Truck which i still have.BTW.

all T400's were that way, not just the Z or the 70

HOWEVER the 70 DID have a special stall speed

You got lucky speaking to the orig owner

i did that on mine 15 years ago and expected to chat with him again but i found out he died 10 years ago

moral of the story

chase down the leads NOW!

Yea, Fate? Luck? Blessing.
I did not want to "stalk" him too much today. :)
Especially since he had to sell the car dealing with an X.
I'll take some cool shots and send them to him, and hopefully he can find some old photos and those original keys.

Some 700s will shift out of 1st gear like a 400 depends on the orig. application of the trans.

My Dad had a mean left handed skyhook when he played college ball at UC Davis back in the day. Caught alot of defenders by surprise as they watched the ball fall through the net, especially considering he was right-handed.

interesting original owner story.

In 68-69 the TH400 was catching on with the drag racers. Some of the high performance dealers tapped in to this with new car ads for special "turbo shift" or "bang shift" automatic transmissions. Some of the original owners of the 427 COPO TH400 cars were told that the cars had "special racing" automatic transmissions. (They do have a rare CX coded TH400.)
Ray Morrison tells a great story about his 1968 Harrell 427 TH400 Nova.
The way I remember Ray telling the story......When Ray picked up his new 1968 427 TH400 Nova at the Dick Harrell Performance shop he was taken out for a test ride by the man himself Dick Harrell famous Funny Car driver. Dick talked about the special TH400 and how strong the transmission is. He even told Ray that you can "neutral drop it". Dick then preceded to stop the Nova on an open road, put it in neutral, revved it to 4000RPM then dropped it in gear! The car screamed off the line in a wild tire smoking hole shot. Ray was quite surprised!

Hey Dennis my 700r4 will shift out 1st into 2nd by itself and lock-up only occurs in 4th gear only. I think this is only the earlier 700's that do this I may be mistaken.

The original owner was a chevy dealer mechanic and yes, thought the same thing, that the tranny was a "special" option (no doubt hyped like you said by the dealers). Especially since it was bought new in NY, New York.

I have been out with several gearhead friends yesterday, and every one was surprised to see this in action (to say the least). No one had ever heard of this. We are all late 30's to early 40's. I guess it was just one of those
things forgotten from the day.

Now I gotta take the 70 COPO out and try it (it is a TH400 as well).

my 68 Caprice 327-turbo 400 would do the same thing, that big boat would even chirp the tires when I did that.
