How come some of the ash trays with the walnut woodgrain that fit a 67/68 dash have a lip at the top and some don't? Are the ones without the lip actually for a Firebird? Or visa-versa? Inquiring minds need to know.

I just received a repro ash tray from Year One. I still have the factory one, just descided to get the repro cause it sits flush against the trim panel. And has the same tecture that the trim piece does. But the stock one has the lip at the top, repro doesn't. And when I ordered the repro, is says specifically that it differs from stock apearance. So maybe some you're seeing are repros, and some are stock.

The pattern of the woodgrain is different for Firebird, or Camaro.
Not sure about the lip?

Hmmmm. Could be, could be. The reason I ask is I bought a walnut dash panel, radio panel and ashtray from a guy back in the late 70's who was parting out the remains of a '68 SS after he rolled it two or three times. That ash tray has no lip. It seems strange that he would have used a repop way back at a time when I'm sure GM originals were still plentiful and easy to obtain. Having said that, he did have a console with rosewood trim and a three-speed shift pattern, which clearly was not correct for that car.

I'm seeing both styles pop up on eBay, but easily 1/3 (minimum) of the listings on eBay for 1st gen Camaro parts are incorrect. Just trying to understand what I have.

Remember that early production ashtrays differed from later units.
Hopefully CRG has some data that gives dates, but just from observation;
*1967 and early 68's do not have a lip
*Sometime early in 68 production the trays got a lip, but no woodgrain covering
*Woodgrain covering was added to the 68 trays on RPO-Z87 cars after lipped trays were introduced

My early (09A) 68 'vert has a black non-lip ashtray ...
