Guys,

I bought my wife an old non running VW bus. Supposedly, we need a policeman to verify the vin number. So i was wondering if anyone in the Bay area wouldnt mind doing this. We live in Sunnyvale.

thanks guys

Jeff, i had this done a couple of times, if nobody answears your thread, i just called the local police and one would come by and look it over and sign it off, but i would make sure i would have all the paper work filled out right and double check that everything was filled out right on both sides, i always had DMV high light the section that needed to be filled out by police. even then id go back and DMV would always have another person working telling me i had left out something  ..hopefully you get someone from DMV that is having a good day  ..Chris

Good advice Chris - I understand the CHP is the better choice over the police.

Trust me, this is a f-- game to some people b/c they get a nut off not telling you the WHOLE story!!

Case in point!!

My Son took the state Realtors licensing test, but not any PAY-FOR study help courses!

He asked the gal at the state what he needed to get to read over and study prior to taking the test AND the B-tch told him EXACTLY half of what was needed! Just get the state book and she left off the Fed. book!

My Son took the test and got like 98 or 99 on the state part and 62 or so on the unknown Fed. part she didn't tell him about!!

I'd a cut 4 tires in my youth over something like this!!

You lost me Paul. Jeff has a car that needs the vin verified before the DMV will register it. Of course he needs to have the DMV form but my guess is the officer sent out will have it if Jeff doesn't...

Just call your the PD or Sheriff's Office and ask them. The vin inspection you need can be done either by the locals or CHP, its the same inspection. The CHP has more training on vin inspections on unusual items. In our area you have to have the paperwork from the DMV before you call to get the inspection done.

Yeah, we have the same thing here in Kansas. Hiway Patrol does ours. $10 per car fee. Must resemble a car, no engine, no vin inspection.

I do hear you on the leaving stuff out, but I usually just take a copy of the applicable statute in when trying to get my stuff done. It takes forever but I usually get what I want.

Be polite and patient, and they usually go okay. I've stopped bothering to correct them when they start taking the "partial" vin off the cowl tag (ie the BDY number) since they don't seem to care if it matches. :)

Any peace officer can do it. I have had it done many times. With the CHP you can make an appointment and take it to them. If you call your city police they will send a "community service" officer to your home to look at the numbers. No matter which way you choose it's free and not a big deal.

Jeff,

Better be sure the VW bus is clean, especially if it was part of the summer of love, before you call the coppers .......

What I am trying to say IS that SOME people get a nut off by knowing you don't know what to do or ask, and then they don't offer up correct help is all!!

Some sort of sick, 13 year old kids game!!

In Michigan also any Officer or even one of our 'senior volunteers' can fill out and sign off on the form....we don't have the form tho... Need that from your DMV..or in our case the Secretary of State office

I think that any notary would also be acceptable. ??
In Florida that is the case.
I never had that problem, cause
I know a bunch of cops, when I get a car, they all run by to see it. :)

You could wait till it is running, cause it really doesn't need to be registered
untill it hits the street.

Unless you really need to transfer the title right away?

jeff, i replied to your post on the team chevelle site. i wrote that you should just call the local p.d. non emergency number and ask for a cop to come over to verify vin. i put up a post a couple days ago on a 67 chevelle that i just verified. not a big deal. if you lived closer, i could come over and do it for you but you are a little to far away just for a signature.

The police were over at a neighbors house due to a bit of a disturbance and while one of them was standing around, I went up to him to ask what was going on and oh by the way, can you swing by when you are done here and validate a VIN. He was pretty cool. When he was done, he walked over and filled out the form for me. This was in San Jose. I did have the form from the DMV ahead of time though.

Jeff- I did this very thing several years ago on a GMC truck… I drove it to the CHP office on Brokow Rd. in San Jose (truck had temporary license) and had the CHP inspect it on site. Or as others have stated just give the local lawman a call.
