Check out this auction, seller claims these are GM rings, i have never seen this clip on a GM trim ring for 69 Z28. The 2 designs i have seen are 1st design with the serations around the inner circumference of the trim ring and the 4 clip style with the CLIPS at the outer edge, they clip over the wheel lip. I emailed him and he claims these are GM rings and they superceded the original 4 clip outer type because GM had problems with them.
Any one got any opinions?

I bought a set of GM trim rings from the dealer in 1989 with those style clips.

Those look like the Wheel Vintiques rings I bought. I saw some originals from dreamweaver's SS350. The clips that lock to the wheel rim were not sharp like those. I have heard that GM did have a problem with the original rings flying off.

I think I saw these before from the same seller. I thought they sold. Here is the link;

Maybe he has a few sets stashed. I have originals a little beat up but off my 10E X77 clips look simular but hard to tell from his picture.

Yea, but a buddy has a original late/late 10E ( of 69)- Z28, and it has the trim rings with the clips that go over the wheel edge. I have also heard that GM discontinued this 4 clip trim ring and superceded it to the type with the full circumference serations which is still availiable from GM part # 9796696. MacNeish says on page 83 - "Its important to note that there were two versions of the original trim rings. One version used four clips that fastened to the OUTER edge of the wheel and the other had fingers that compress into the inner part of the wheel.

The ad says "The boxes were no good anymore"
Hmmmm?

Kurt, or John, or any other TC member, have you ever seen this type of clip on original cars?

which is still availiable from GM part # 9796696.

They have been discontinued as well. There is another type that is similar to the 696 but not quite the same from what I understand.

There are still a few dealers in the US that have them as well. As of last week there were about 8-10 nationwide according to a local dealer I asked to do a parts search. Most dealers are asking anywhere from 72.00- 140.00US each when I called a few up. Some dealers are marking up the parts a huge amount. I called a dealer about an NOS gas cap last week and he wanted 412.42 for it. I can go to other dealers and get the same cap for between 120-165.00.

Thanks for that Mike. It is kinda sad when people try to monopolize on the last remaining parts.
BTW, i have 2 nos gas caps sitting in front of my monitor for a 69.
I still am wondering about the weird trim rings on ebay.

I think Gary L. nailed it rite-

No problem, there were 6 rings but I bought them myself. The expensive caps were the 67 SS and RS caps I did not look into the 69's.

dreamweaver, I am pretty sure these caps are still availiable from GM the part is #3931449 group 3.028. There is 1 on ebay with a buy it now-

The 2 i have are the same as the ebay cap but in a older box. BTW the long discontinued originals # 3914863 are different from the current part number. Originals are perfectly round with no ears. Hope this helps.

Jim not to question your opinion or anything, but would you please clarify how you know they are real GM trim rings? The seller from the ongoing posts has NO boxes and does not supply any part numbers. He just says they are correct, and NOS, he actually does not say they are GM rings?

"Quote from his auction" -"1969 Camaro Z-28 302 Rallysport 15x7 Trim Rings NOS. These are Originals are Extremely hard to find! They have been sitting for years on the shelf. The boxes are no good anymore. The trim rings are NOS. They may have very very minor surface scratches. They are very small and the pictures cant pick them up. They rings will need to be cleaned up as the glue from the boxes is on some of them, it will come off and did not effect the trim rings. I am giving all the honest details as I can, they are very nice!!!! All glue and scratches will buff out. This is the way they came from the factory. They have the 4 clips on the back see the pictures. Also they have the oval value stem holes see pictures. They are not reproductions, these are the real deal!!!"

. Yes, the clips from your posted auction # 330059901031 look the same but the rings in question from the on going discussed ebay auctions have the oval holes unlike the cutout holes shown on the ebay auction you posted. I dont doubt for a second that GM might have updated and used this weird type clip in later released part numbers for different cars, but not for 1969 Z28 camaros. I have bought a lot of GM trim rings over the last 35 years for 69 Z28,s ( i work for a restoration shop) and they have NEVER had this type of clip. The 2 GM part numbers were # 9796696, which is still availiable and the original 4 clip part number was # 3901708, it is long dead. The later released issue of the 9796696 ring had silver coloured 360 degree serations, where as the original issues had black. I recently with in the last 6 months bought a set of these rings, and they have the silver serations.
Maybe the current availiable Nov/Dec.06 GM # 9796696 ring was supplied to GM from a outside vendor?
I am not pointing any fingers but i am still wondering out loud. hhhhmmmmm?

"My thoughts not yours" and not necessarily correct.

they are NOT correct but they are GM and they fit the original "form, fit, function". Based on the plating comparison on the GM ones I referenced and his, I HAVE compared the ones I referenced to the repops, they are NOT the same on the underside plating.

"Quote from his auction" -"1969 Camaro Z-28 302 Rallysport 15x7 Trim Rings NOS. These are Originals are Extremely hard to find! They have been sitting for years on the shelf. The boxes are no good anymore.

He is FULL OF ?¥ø† on that, I am assuming they came in boxes JUST LIKE the sale I referenced above, he just doesn't want people seeing the bar code labels so he pitches the boxes.

The trim rings are NOS. They may have very very minor surface scratches. They are very small and the pictures cant pick them up. They rings will need to be cleaned up as the glue from the boxes is on some of them, it will come off and did not effect the trim rings. He just doesn't get "honest" with his facts on part number and the boxes AND the fact he seems to have at LEAST 3 sets ... i would bet more like 20 sets ...

Those he are selling are from GMC and Chevrolet trucks from the 80's ...

Yes, the clips from your posted auction # 330059901031 look the same but the rings in question from the on going discussed ebay auctions have the oval holes unlike the cutout holes shown on the ebay auction you posted.

Apples and oranges. they are two different part numbers, the construction is identical beyond that, one is for the wider Chevy truck wheels (his)

Always known to have complete hole for valve stem. Just wondered if a magnet will stick to these? They do look too polished.
