I have a date correct water pump I'm getting ready to put on my '69 RS/SS.
I need to paint it engine orange and have some questions on what is correct.
I know the flange for the pully / fan and the shaft should not be painted.
What about the cover on the back and the bolts that hold the cover on ?
Thanks
Billy

Paint the whole thing, or it will rust. (except hub and shaft)
Technically, the paint would be very thin on back, but can't really see back there anyways.
Make it look as nice as the rest of your engine.

To be correct it should be installed prior to paint-thats how Chevy did it.

Yes, but really if you want that look, just lay it flat on a piece of cardboard,
then only paint from the front.
It gets messy painting it with the engine installed in the car. ;)

I painted mine for my 77 before I put it together. Not a super-restore, and I hate painted gaskets. For giggles, I took the cover off and hit it with clear coat. I don't even know if you can see it once it is installed. :)

I too prefer not to paint the gaskets or the rear cover. No problem with rust yet. Clearcoat probably a good idea. As you can see, you can see it.

In my opinion yours is too perfect.
Nothing really wrong with that,
but the Flint paint guy would have "tried" to get the back of the pump.
It should have more of an overspray look to it.

Most of the cars these days are nicer then they were originally.

I prefer not to "overspray" stuff, so I painted my pump completely. - mine is nicer then factory too. ;)

The Yenko site occasionally runs a photo of a '70 LT-1 that was pulled when new for a race motor. Still on the engine stand 36 years later. If a restoration shop painted an engine like that you would insist it be done over. Thin, sloppy, almost no paint at all on the back of the block. Check it out:

William, I have seen that before - very educational. :)

Amazing time capsule. Not many left like that one.

Thanks for all the replys.I'm going to just paint it all orange. It's not a concourse car so I agree w/ Jeff on the overspray.I do like the look of the unpainted cover, but I'm going for a more correct look.
