: What gears should I use?

I am about to put a new eaton posi and gears in my 69 camaro 8.2 10 bolt. Currently I have a TKO600 in it also. Next year I will be pulling the TKO600 and installing it in a 68 camaro and putting a turbo 350 in the 69 camaro. My question is what would be a good gear ratio choice to use now that will work good with the tko600 2.87 first gear but also be good with the turbo 350 auto when it is installed? I was thinking a 3.42 or 3.36? Also the rear tire height is 26". Let me know what you think? Thanks

The gear range you selected is the range I would have recommended for a daily driver type of car. You don't mention chassis setup, engine choice or driving style, so it's hard for folks to recommend gears without knowing your intentions (daily driver, street rod, pro street, racer????).

If you're building a high-revving SB engine, then I'd go to 3.73 or 4.10 (or even higher).

It is a 400 HP 40 TQ street car with occaional trip to the local drag strip. I could see 3.73 or 4.11 with the TKO600 but not with the auto t350? Anyone else? Thanks

Gear ratios for the 8.2 are 3.36 and 3.55. There isn't a 3.42 for this rear end. The 3.36 would be best if the car will be on the highway much. The 3.55 would be better if it was mostly in town or local use. You probably wouldn't want to drive it for a long distance with the 3.55 very often.

With the overdrive on the TKO, 3.42 or 3.73 will be your best choices, depending on what rpm your engine is happiest on the highway.

Thanks for the replies. What rpm would I be at for 70mph with the T350 auto, 3.55 and 3.36 gears with a 26" tire?

www.richmondgear.com has a calculator. Enter the info you specified and compare. Your final ratio in a non-overdrive tranny (T350, etc) is 1 (x axle gear ratio). Overdrive trannys will vary. As others have stated, a 3.08, 3.36, or 3.55 axle gear might suit you, depending on your needs.

Put the 3.55 rear in. When you do want to go you will have some semblance of torque to plant you back in the seat. My .02 cents.
