I've got a 67 vert I'm moving in the pt direction. Put in GW suspention last year along with new wheels and tires. This year was a stout 406. As soon as my wife recovers, the tremec will come. I'm 6'4" and really am in need of some after market seats. Any advice?

I have a '68 vert, and I've done no research on if they will work. But I'm planning on using the seats from a newer Cadillac CTS. I know I'll have to fab up the mounts, but I'm replacing the entire floor anyway. I figure it wouldn't be too hard since I'm starting from scratch anyway. The Cadillac seats are more comfortable for bigger guys, I'm 6"4' as well. Plus the seat belt is a shoulder belt that is integrated in the seat. This will work great for a vert.

I'm at least a year away from seeing if these will work, I'm still in the disassemble mode, but this is part of my plan.

The most common seats I hear of being used on here are 4th gen Camaro seats.

Eric. The floor anchors in first gen camaros weren't made to handle the stress of the weight of a human body and the seat in an accident. The seats were held in by the person that was held in by the seat belts anchored differently. The existing seat anchors really aren't heavy duty enough to support a seat with integrated seat belts without a decent amount of reinforcement.

Just FYI, your safety is always first to us.

You may want to try sitting in any seat that you are considering. What fits me may not fit you at all.

You can gain some headroom by removing the seat pan and mounting the seat directly to the floor. If you do this adequate precautions should be used to reinforce the mounting locations to support the seat in case of a crash.

Thanks Christopher, I thought I'd be doing a lot more reinforcement but thanks for the confirmation. I tend to over engineer most of the stuff I do and safety is my #1 priority, that’s why I want shoulder belts in the first place. Once I get the seats, see how they fit, etc I’ll ask for opinions with pictures. I’m using a full floor replacement pan so I really do have a blank slate to add reinforcement. And since I’m hacking up a V6 car that has already been hacked I don’t feel too guilty about straying far from originality.

Thanks

It`s amazing what a difference a good set of seats can make, especially in a car that really corners. I was lucky enough to score a set of real Recaro seats from a junkyard many years ago for $50!!! Those were great seats and made my `70 Firebird feel like it had half as much body lean (half of the lean was *my* body leaning!). The 4th gen seats are nice. I used a set out of a `98 Z-28 in my `75 TA. If you want more lateral support the 4th gen TA seats have more than the Camaro ones do. I find them very comfortable (6'2"/245lbs.) and the adj. lumbar support is nice.
If you`re looking for something more hardcore and a LOT lighter check out www.mastercraftseats.com (http://www.mastercraftseats.com) They`re chrome moly tube frame suspension seats. Super lightweight and super comfortable. They`re available in custom widths for big guys (and gals) too. My father started using them in `74 for off road racing and I`ve been a big fan ever since. We used heated, power leather seats from a 2004 Honda Accord and the rear seat from the same. Looks great and more importantly is comfortable. We removed the seatpans and reinforced the floor at the mounting points. We used 3 point seatbelts from Morris Classics. This is in a 67 coupe.

Thanks for the replies gents. Obviously, my vert has a 2nd floor for support, any way to mount seat directly to main floor to buy myself more room? What do you guys do do reinforce floor after removing seat pan?

We tried this already, the seats are to huge for the Camaro. just engulfs the interior. We ended up using them in a 65 GTO and they were bid in that also. They also sit very high. We were seduced by the built in shoulder harness, but they did not fit.

Sorry Bonzo no pics right now, the car is buried in the garage and Im in deep in home renos, will take pics in the new year and post. We quite like the look of both front and rear and the quality of the seats is very good.

67ssdroptop, we reinforced the floor on the bottom of the car by welding plates at the anchor points. As Christopher pointed out, in the event of a collision the real strength is in the seatbelt anchor points.

After getting the vinyl and houndstooth material from Year One I believe it was around $400.00 to have the pair recovered. The brackets from Procar bolted right up and the seats are similar in size to the stockers.

another option is arizen. I have them in my car. Have only driven it about 5 miles so can't comment to much on them. I'm 6'4" and set them as low as possible as well as allowing them to slide back almost tell the seat hits the rear seat.

I don't have the headliner in yet so not sure if my head will hit or not.

I found a pair of seats from a 86 firebird on ebay. The price is right, but before I bid, does anyone know if the brackets will mount up to my 68 RS without any major modifications.
If they do work, I plan on throwing on a set of cheap seat covers until I can afford to get them recovered with something nicer.
Thanks for the help.

After viewing this thread I went to the corbeau and the pro-car site and I'm not at that phase yet but I'm definetly going that route. I went so far as to call the guy at Pro-car...who was super cool and knows his stuff...the number is on the web site and he's based in Minn. The seats are really nice and he has a bunch of styles...one in particular that is similar to a stock 67 look, which I liked, but he also has ready to bolt in monts and tracks with no fabrication...and thats what sold me!

I sent them an e-mail stating I got a quote for $672 for the Rally seats and the adapters from Summit. I then asked him ( Jim from motorsportseats.com ) if he could give a better deal since their website says to call for the " best internet deal ". His reply to me in an e-mail was "Dream on." Never will I do business with him. Nice customer service. Was I wrong in asking if he could do a better deal since there weren't any price quotes on the website?

I spoke to Jim Houston...same guy as you??? dont know, anyway he was in Minnesota, and he quoted me 275.00/seat with a direct bolt in seat track for 68.00. These #'s times 2 seats, plus shipping, is gonna be real close to your 672.00 quote you got, I would say.He was super nice to me and informative,he may be one of those guys that doesnt like to be price shopped though...dont know.I didnt price shop him cause I liked the seat style and was pretty much sold to begin with and when I do the math on a complete rebuild on my seats, new foam, covers, labor etc,I'm gonna be in that deep anyway.

2000 and something 4th gen Camaro seats. Pretty sure their from a 2000. I tried a set of 04 GTO seats but they would not fit down in between the rockers and tranny hump. When we tried fitting them it was kinda funny as I sat in them and was looking over the top of the windsheild.

Horrible I know, but many 80's BMW 3 series came with Recaro seats, that's what we did after removing the seat pans they are awesome. Great lateral bolsters for support, thigh supports for tall guys and 6 way adjustable manual controls for up/ down, seat tilt and recline. Even have lumbar support adjustment. If you want pics let me know, in a 69.

Only problem with them is that they are designed for a production car and are more universal in their fit. I would prefer narrower bolsters for more support, they are a little wide to fit um, er, bigger people.

I have seats from a Mercedes, don't know what model. The guy I bought them from said they were from an Audi. The Audi TT has the same kind of seats. They are made by Recaro. Leather covering and very comfortable. Good thing is that they have a lot of travel in their tracks so they can go all the way back to the back seat. Works great for my 6'5" body.

I'm surprised to see so many 4th gen Camaro seats being used. I hate the ones in my 99 SS. Its the most uncomfortable seat i've sat in. The seats that came in trans ams are so much better. I don't know why they didn't use them in the Camaro too. They have lumbar, bolsters for your legs and sides, adjustible head rests and they have a lot more padding. I'll be swapping my 4th Camaro seats for Trans Am seats before long.

This is a great thread! I am trying to figure out what seats to put in my 68. When you guys removed the seat pan how did you go about reinforcing the floor for the seats? I need to gain some head room so I can sit lower, I had gen 2 seats and I felt like I was driving a bus!

I am running Arizen seats with universal flat brakets. I am 6'5" 250 and these seats fit me perfect but I am in good shape. I actually picked up some head and leg room with the new brakets.

They are mounted to the factory seat pan. The flat brakets were a couple inches longer and I had to drill my own mounting holes which allowed me to slide the whole assembly back a little. The sliders basically sit right on two steel plates which anchor the seat to the floor. It made a big difference in leg room and head room.

I can get the exact height for you if you need it, but yes it is basically right up to the headliner. Funny you ask because this past weekend my headliner started to sag a little for some god awful reason and I was admiring how big a pain in the rear it will be if I needed to replace it again.

I can only imagine the pain it will be to do mine. That is kind of why I am curious how tall your main hoop is, I got a number of 44" from the top of the hoop to the bottom of the legs does that sound right to you? I have no idea what an installed height from floor pan to top of hoop would be. I do not want to cut the legs to short. Can you help me out a little??

44" seems tall. If I was to measure from the bottom of the leg where it hit the floor pan to the approx top of the hoop it is close to 36-37". My bar really hugs the contour on the interior so it tough to get the exact measuremet. I see that you located in CA, if that's so-cal you can come by can grap some measurements if you like.

I don't normally post do not in Pro Touring but I imagine I am HWY Warrior with a 600Hp BBC 70Z M22 to 3.08's and sit in a Connely Leather Interior from a 70 3.8S BMW. One thing I gotta say about all 1st and 2nd Gen Camaro Seats is that they: "SUCK". Man, I've done a lot of Rallying over the years and the British Anglia, Lotus's and even Chrysler built better seats. Rather then putting out the doe on after market designs like Ricardo, I recommend Wrecking Yard deals from: BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Subaru WSX ... etc. I must say the Europeans design and build a descent seat. You can modify to mount European Front Seats and recover your rear Camaro seats with the leather from the donner car. A descent local furniture upholstery can do this for you and they are usually very reasonably priced as they like the advertising.

PS: 99% of the time you can use the original Camaro Front Seat Tracks to mount the Donner Front Seats. You might have to fab brackets from 3/8's flat bar, but it's not that big of a deal.

This is not a good PIC of my ride but I'm presenting a 1970 THEME:

I know a few guys using the Fiero seats. I looked into this and found a few sets on ebay ... in the end I used Recaro. I am 6'3" so I needed to do away with the seatbelt retractor because it would get in the way of lowering the seat frame all the way down. I went to a cam lock/racing seatbelt and that allowed me to put the seat frame low enough so I had the needed head room.
