View Full Version : New Fuel Tank
Hot 67 Dec 20th, 06, 05:49 PM I got my new Tank today and is is really nice. I bought a Rick's stainless steel tank through one of our sponcors, GP Supper Stores. Guys, this Tank is sh*t hot. Steel is really ig great shape and the welds are great. I ordered mine with a stock style 0 to 90 ohm sending unit and a in-tank AC/Delco high pressure pump to feed my 350 TPI engine. Price and delivery time was very good. Lisa's service was FANTISTIC.
Now I got a couple of questions. The tank has a vent port (Drilled & threaded) What should I use for a vent plug. Will a open standard fitting and piece of fuel hose be OK, or should I try to find a "Vented" fitting. Where might I find a vented fitting?
Next, How should I finish the stainless? My thought is to use Rhino Liner on the top and paint the bottom & sides the same as the Car. How would that look and hold up?
Thanks for your opinion/advice
Jerry
South Side Goons & Hitmen Dec 20th, 06, 06:47 PM Be careful on the vent port. Some of those leak around turns. I have a 1969 with a vented gas tank tube at the top right corner. It leaked around the vent tube when taking a turn. A vent cap would be the best choice. I would measure the fitting around there and try an Adnaced Auto Parts, Carquest or NAPA. FWIW, I sealed mine with Permatex fuel tank repair and some JB Weld. Now I need to drive the thing.
The Ricks tanks are nice. I wish I went with them. My car had a fuel cell when I bought it and I got rid of that unsightly box.
I would use any type of good clear metal sealer to finish the stainless. Even though it says stainless I have seen stainless steel rust. I know. My new tank in my car is starting to rust and I drove it about 80 miles since it was put in and parked it in my garage. I put rust inhibitor on it caled Rust Fix. It's the Canadian made tank, not the cheap Tawain tank. Go figure.
Good Luck!! Sounds like it's a nice ride!!
67pat Dec 20th, 06, 07:27 PM They make a stutor vent for that tank application...it's a one way valve...lets air in via acuum tank pressure but doesnt let anything out.where to get them ??????? I've seen them on dragsters and road race cars where you get alot of fuel movement so I would try a Rod shop in your area
Hot 67 Dec 21st, 06, 05:58 AM A Stubor valve, OK I've never heard of that name, but I'll check with the Hot Rod shops. Thanks for the info.

69TAPoser Dec 21st, 06, 08:17 AM As 67pat mentions, be careful how you vent the tank. I have never heard of a Stutor valve, but I totally agree with the description. You want something that will not let the fuel out in the case of a rollover or sloshing (seems obvious, but I have seen many overlook this and it is dangerous). Most drag/race cars use "rollover valves" or "vent check valves" that basically close the vent when jarred. Do a search on either of these terms on Jegs or Summit and you will get some options.
I would also contact Rick's to see what they recommend.

txturbo Dec 21st, 06, 11:09 AM When I get mine, I'm just going to paint it with clear por-15.

Thats what I did. Came out great. I don't know if there is a difference, but mine was a two part paint. It was called Glisten, by POR15. Looks beautiful.
Hot 67 Dec 21st, 06, 03:09 PM I picked up a Qt of 2 part clear made for stainless steel from the local paint supply company, which they "Guarantee" will cover as well and last as long as POR-15. It is a Nason product. I'll give it a try and let you guys know how it works.
As far as the "stubor"valve, the Hot Rod shops here had no clue what I was asking for, however they did manage to sell me a one way check valve made by Carter. Me thinks that maybe 67pat was pulling my leg a bit.
Anyway, thanks to all for the advice and suggestions.
Merry Christmas,
Jerry
clwilcox33 Dec 21st, 06, 03:17 PM It's actually called Studor, and is a brand name. They make one way valves primarily for plumbing applications. Some folks have been calling the types of valves they produce studor regardless of the brand....just like all facial tissues are Kleenex, and all cotton swabs are Q-Tips to me (don't forget Band-Aid :D ). Anyway, I don't know if Studor has anything that will fit your application but do some web searches on it.
South Side Goons & Hitmen Dec 21st, 06, 06:45 PM Does anyone know where to get POR-15 in the Chicago area? I looked for this in some Auto parts stores but they did not carry it.
Hot 67 Dec 21st, 06, 07:18 PM You can order it thru Eastwood Co. or most likely any of the jobber paint supply houses can get it for you. Its good st5uff and will stick to almost anything.

JimM Dec 21st, 06, 07:50 PM por15.com always works.
Johnny B Dec 21st, 06, 10:58 PM Does anyone know where to get POR-15 in the Chicago area?
I don't know about finding POR products at local retailers. But, I order from this place http://www.rustymetalpaint.com/ If I place the order early in the day, UPS usually has it to me the next day. They're in Valpariso, IN. (closest on-line POR distributor I have found near the Chicago area.)....Jb
Hot 67 Dec 26th, 06, 03:37 PM Got my new tank installed today. It fits great. I coated the tank with a clear coat made for stainless, got the vent valve from the local Hot Rod shop. Now all is well with the install. Looks great, fits great. Was a little pricy, but I got a substantial discount buying thru GP Superstore.
Lisa was great to deal with. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

ProdigyCustoms Dec 26th, 06, 06:39 PM Thanks for the kind words Jerry. Those tanks are a work of art. Like you said, a bit pricey but worth it. Glad we could soften the blow a bit.
