I want to buy a GM Performance Parts crate engine for my 69 Camaro. I want to paint over the black to a classic looking chevy orange. What is the best way to go about this? Can I just paint over the existing black? What is the best way to paint the block? i.e. spray cans, spray gun, professional jobs, etc.

Crates come Black because it is cheep. Krylon makes Chevy engine Orange, so do others. Spray cans work fine people have been using it for decades. I would strip off parts you don't want Orange, tape off anything that should not be Orange, once over with a 3M scuff pad, wipe down with prep-solvant and paint 4-5 light coats (for factory look) 7-10 (for a wet look). Depending on how much you drive the car and how you store it will determine how good that paint will look in six months. You can mix and paint using a gun, but you need to be careful not to put it on too heavy, besides the obvious runs in the paint, you increase the change of poor adhesion. Good luck, 2 cans will do the job right in my opinion

The Krylon stuff is only heat-resistant to about 300 degrees - use "VHT" Hi-Temp Chevy Orange instead - it's good to 550, and will last longer on the exhaust side of the heads. Every speed shop has it.

I wiped mine with laquer thinner then I used a paint by dupli-color. Got it at NAPA. Supposed to be a "cermaic paint". Figure that one, but so far so good. I've got a couple hundred miles on it.
