Hello all,
I did some experimenting with some spray cans and found a combination that I think looks great and may be good as a sealer too. Unfortunately it is not for you original restoring folks. I only tried this on test metal but might be tempted to do it in my trunk too. I first shot the metal with 3m rubberized undercoating (black) and let it dry. Then followed up with krylons stone textured paint (black with white flecks). I used the stone textured paint sparingly till I got the amount of white flecks I desired. When I shot the textured paint by itself, the finish had too much white flecks and had too much "texture". After my backyard paints had dried then I finished it off with a clear coat. I tried some of the auto parts splatter paint but it didn't look as good as the spray gun types.
