Do you have a mass air flow sensor? If you do, it won't run at all if you take the intake hose off. If you don't, it'll sound like a Hoover vacuum cleaner when you hit the gas and it'll suck in all the dirt you don't really want into your engine.

It doesn't help the Mass Air Flow sensor nor the engine. You would be doing it more harm than good.

Driving just a little bit is not likely to do any measurable damage. The engine will run fine. There is a small but increased risk of debris damaging the air flow sensor. If all the piping is connected the chance of a large particle getting through is small. Dust will increase engine wear. It is a matter of increased risk. The longer you drive the more the risk and don't drive on a gravel road.

Do not drive around without an air filter protecting your engine. It's there for a reason.
