FROM MY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER "CARS ON LINE":
The 2006 prices are down about 7 percent from last year. That's not a significant decrease. We thought we would have seen a significant weakening in prices by comparing last year to this year (2006.) But prices have stayed pretty even. Some went up and some went down. All of the Mopars went up in value over last year. Most of the Chevrolet muscle cars have held their pricing, not going up or down, although the high profile LS6 Chevelle is more valuable this year than last year. Ford Mustangs all went up just slightly over last year. The Ford Thunderbirds have taken quite a dive, but we have been noting that all year. That is no surprise. Overall the market looks like it weathered a correction in market values. Maybe we'll be poised for prices to head upwards again in January when the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale fans the flames of the market once again.
The numbers above are compiled from the results of high profile auctions around the country. Many of these auction prices are going to be inflated by a factor of six to eight percent because the auction companies report their commissions as part of the price. You will not see the highest price paid reflected in the prices above, only the average price of all cars in their category. Also, we throw out extreme prices like those where the cars might be so unique that they are one-of-a-kind. That would distort the average pricing. We look for the median in any array of prices for a particular make and model. Where you see the * symbol, that indicates that we did not keep statistics on this category in prior years. The N/A designation means we could not find an actual sale made for that category.
