Hoping to soon score a Nova 8.5 for my vert.
Would anyone not recommend this posi: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190064535940 ?
I asked the seller to post the casting number, and will add that when I have it.

Am I correct in assuming if it fit a 2.73 gear it will also fit a 3.08?

While I'd love to do this all on the cheap, I also do not want it to break AGAIN... This is a stickshift car that very possibly will see a dragstrip again with traction again and preferably not need a trailer to get back home (again)

Would I be better off biting the bullet and getting a new eaton 31 spline posi and new axles?

This is an Eaton posi, but you need to be sure that it fits the GM corporate 8.5 and not the "O" 8.5 or one of the other odd ball GM rear ends. You also need to know if it is 28 or 30 spline. If it is for the 8.5 corporate rear end then it is probably a new Eaton because there were very few Eatons used in the 8.5 from the factory. It also has the 400 pound springs, which also makes me think it is a new Eaton. There might not be a casting number on it, but there should be an Eaton part number engraved on the edge of the ring gear flange. It might be hard to see because it is lightly engraved, but it should be there somewhere.

Are your 28 spline axles in good shape? If the are worn where the bearing run then you need to replace them anyway. It doesn't cost much more to go with the 30 spline parts instead of the 28s.

The seller resonded that the diff came out of a 75 pontiac, and the only numbers he can find on it are "h 24 d"

Is that enough info to know if it will work in a 73 Nova rear?

What kind of Pontiac was it? How many splines? There should be a number on the edge of the ring gear flange.

so, on the posi, the only info I can get is it came out of a 75 "pontiac" and the code "h 24 d" is on it. The seller said there is a another number on the ring gear flange but he cannot read it. It is an Eaton with 400 lb springs as Freddy posted earlier. It is a 30 spline unit. I have not bid on it yet, the current bid is cheap and has not met reserve.

Is there enough info to know for sure this will work in a 73 Nova 3.08 open rear end?

If it is out of a big Pontiac then it probably won't work. If it is out of a Grand Prix, Le Mans or Firebird then it will. With it being 30 spline and out of a '75 then I think it is probably out of a big car. The Grand Prix, Le Mans and Firebird never had 30 spline axles. Someone could have upgraded it, but how likely is that? You still need more information.

My answer would be YES. You've already broke one and already plan to go back to the track. Why peice meal one together to save a few bucks. I'd say do it once and do it right the first time. You'll be happy you did and be money ahead in the long run. Shipping from Freddie to me was only $113, so it may not be a much as you think. Spend the money now and make your next BBQ a BYOB. :D (J/K)

I heard from the sellor on that posi, it was a 1975 Pontiac Grandville.
That's a big car and won't fit, confirm?

I don't know. I'm not familiar with a Grandville. I don't know what rear end it would have. If you just had a number off of it you could look it up and be sure.

Grandville is a full size car, I think the name replaced Bonneville.

The Impala used the same 8.5 corporate rear end as the other Chevy cars, but Pontiac, Buick and Olds sometimes used other rear ends. I don't know what would have been in this car. You'd just be taking a chance on this one without having any numbers off of it.

I see you found a rear. Have you thought about a 9 inch Ford? A 57-59 Ford car,Ranchero or Station wagon, Granada and Versaille , Edsel too ,will bolt in, they are strong and parts are cheap and easier to replace than GM. Just a suggegtion.

Jim,I have a 8.5 posi looks to be out of a 79 camaro I got this rear free and have no use for it.If you think this unit will work you can have it.I will pull it out it will need to be cleaned up due to sitting for so long.I posted some info under decode section as axle stamp decode if you want to look at it.If you want the whole rear you can have that too.Let me know if you want it and I can get you some pics and more info if you think it will work

Scott, thanks much for the kind offer, and I just may take you up on it.

I am bidding on a 30 spline eaton posi that may or may not fit, yours will be a 28 spline, but it will fit for sure (from the original application) I'll let you know in a couple of weeks, once the rear gets here and I have a chance to inspect the axles and see if I score the 30 spline and if it fits.

If I need to buy new axles, I'll go with a 30 spline posi even if I have to buy it new.
