Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions/preferences on engine compartment paint. This will be my first time doing this. Thanks

Tom,

Pretty common question around here -

If you think you have a "common" question - best bet is to use the "search" link in the upper right corner of these pages. I did a search on the words "engine compartment" and found this question / answer session.

Hope this helps - and Have a Great New Year!

Tom- If you are not doing an authintic resto, I would use POR-15. It leaves a rock hard finish and is virtually indestructable. I have used it on 2 different cars (1 engine comp and 1 complete chassis) and love the results.

DP-90 works good for a general semi-gloss black and it will hold up super.

Tom,
Yes it can be sprayed but you must thin it with their thinner. 2. you have a quick drying time (usually 18-20 min @70 degrees) and you must spray a second coat within that time or else nothing will stick to it ever. 3. If you plan to paint exposed to the sunlite area's you must top coat with thier clear coat or the top coat gloss black. I have used it on my last two projects (by spraying) and kept my areas to be sprayed to about 10x10 so that I could get a second coat on and I have not top coated it at all. It shines better that most custom paint jobs and washes up easily and best of all it hasn't chipped at all on the underside.

If you spray POR-15 make absolutely sure to use a respirator (not one of those cheap dust masks). It's a very nasty substance when airborne.
