: Vintage Air Worth the price?
wiqed67 Dec 29th, 06, 10:13 AM I was wondering what everyone thought about their vintage air
installation. I have a 67 camaro and am thinking of installing this
vintage air unit. Anyone have any install pictures
Codi Dec 29th, 06, 10:47 AM If you like a comfortable cruise with windows up, then yes. I have installed several air units in 55 to 57 chevys. All were more of a custom install and the units worked very well. It is some work, but not all that bad. Just take your time and think everything through.
zdld17 Dec 29th, 06, 11:13 AM Same here on Trifives and First Gen. There are others but you will pay more. Cheaper if you do it yourself. Hit the EASY button.
Brian Lewis Dec 29th, 06, 11:25 AM Its worth it, I did it, took me many months on and off trudging thru the installation guide. Take your time and conquer one page at a time. Its intimidating at first but worth it in the end. Check out gpsuperstore.com, they can get you a nice discount.
ProdigyCustoms Dec 29th, 06, 11:57 AM The gen 4 set up is coming very soon, and should be fantastic. I will do a announcement and introductory price special through GPSuperStore.com, soon as I get the word.
clwilcox33 Dec 29th, 06, 11:59 AM Hey Frank, what is the Gen 4 setup?
Rocketrod Dec 29th, 06, 01:05 PM Hey Frank, what is the Gen 4 setup?
What he said AND do you have to fabricate brackets, etc to mount the unit under the dash???
hhott71 Dec 30th, 06, 07:41 AM The Classic Auto AC is a better system.
Separate heater core and AC Coil, not a cheap all in one core.
Serviceable parts on and in the HVAC case, not a glued together box.
You do get what ya pay for.
You're already spending $1,000+ whats another $50 or so for quality?
And the unit fits, its designed for the car with detailed instructions.
www.bought4less.com carries the units
Pictures are on the site of the unit and installed

A Couple things, most important to us, is we, GPSuperStore.com, your sponsor, also sell Classic Air, and are pretty hard to beat on price and expertise. Also, Classic is a bit more then $50 more then the Vintage sure fit, about $200 actually with the new Classic Air price increase. However, with that said, the new Gen IV will probably be the same price as the Classic Air.
We sell lots of both. We are approaching top 25 in sales with Vintage Air and selling quite a few Classic Air also. in fact placing 2 orders for Team members Weds.
ProdigyCustoms Dec 30th, 06, 05:39 PM Hey Frank, what is the Gen 4 setup?
The Gen IV addresses all the issues and selling points of the other systems, and is sadi to have some additional features that must remain secret until the formal introduction. But the Gen IV is going to be pretty cool, get it, pretty cool! LOL! At the bottom of this post is a link to some information on another Gen IV set up already out. Specs will be very similar. I expect pricing to be somewhere in the $1250 range for the entire kit which puts it at about the same cost as doing a Gen 2 kit we custom assemble now. I know hose routing (always a question) can be either through the heater box block plate similar to the sure fit design, or can be done with the bulkhead / smooth firewall that is so popular and so hard to do with the Sure Fit.
Lisa and I will be going to Vintage Air School on March 1st to learn everything about the new systems. In the meantime, we will be doing a phone schooling soon. I have a kit on order and will be doing a install and story as soon as I can get one.

wiqed67 Dec 31st, 06, 04:19 PM Thanks alot for all the information. I was considering going with the smooth firewall but haven't made up my mind yet. I will look at the Gen IV. Thanks again to all you guys, you are always really helpfull. I am new to all this so everything i'm doing is always a new experience which is what makes it frustrating and at the same time fun.
MLC68 Jan 3rd, 07, 08:56 PM Curious as to your opinion on purchasing a good used complete unit and installing it vs. a classic air system. Anyone actually try to put in an original a/c system into a car that did not come with one from the factory? I found a complete "used unit" for about a grand including shipping BUT have no idea of how to install it. Instructions out there for viewing/purchase?
Thanks in advance y'all for your thoughts and feedback.
Chris
ProdigyCustoms Jan 3rd, 07, 11:33 PM It is pretty easy to install factory air, just a matter of opening a hole. But if your not trying to keep the car original in the A/C sense, pretty much any aftermarket unit will out perform it and is less intrusive. Ever change 6 and 8 spark plug on a factory A/C car?
mb302rs Jan 5th, 07, 06:17 PM Installed a vintage air sure-fit in a 69 about 3 yrs ago. First time ever worked on a/c, real easy cools great. Its in a daily driver, only had two problems-
after about a year ,the original GM switch (nonAC) was fried ,and my install was for drivers side compressor w/headers ... the way the brackets were made the bolts kept breaking off where they met the header. Had to get some GM brackets that bolted to the front of the head to help stableize it.
It was a great investment.
CFunK Jan 6th, 07, 12:48 PM Does the Gen IV alleviate the problem of having to remove the passenger side fender?
ProdigyCustoms Jan 6th, 07, 12:52 PM You do not have to remove the fender even for the Sure Fit, only the inner fender. Which can also be a treat if the clips are old, rusty and spinning. I do not have installation instructions yet for the Gern IV, which is partly why I want to do the install story. But I would have to assume the inner fender would need to be removed
capt68 Jan 7th, 07, 04:01 PM I recently installed the Vintage Air Sure Fit in my ’67. I didn’t find it too difficult. The only thing I have left is to take it to a shop to have the hose couplings crimped at the compressor. No doubt, the installation will be easier to accomplish with the passenger side fender off the car but I think you can get it done with the fender in place. I have pics if anyone would like to see them.
