View Full Version : best guess on HP based on ET
bilydean Dec 29th, 06, 03:43 PM OK. Way back in College I had a 1961 Corvette that I took to Fremont drag strip here in California. I had a 454, TH400, 12-bolt 3.73 rear end. The tires were G60-15s. This was the first time I had ever been to the drag so not real good on my reaction times. However, I do remember the time slip. So this is a car that weighed 3450 with me in it, thru the mufflers and on street tires, I pulled a 13.20 sec @ 114.5 mph in the quarter. How would I figure out the HP at the engine?
thanks

wiskeesour Dec 29th, 06, 03:50 PM go to google, type in search< horsepower calculator
bilydean Dec 29th, 06, 04:05 PM I am guessing that most calculators assume uncorked and slicks. That is why I am asking the folks here, I did this with street tires and thru mufflers. I know the ET would be much better even with the street tires if I know what I was doing back then.

wiskeesour Dec 29th, 06, 04:15 PM my guess with street tires thru muffs is 400-415 flywheel......
zdld17 Dec 29th, 06, 04:47 PM Well sonny, my old Power -speed caluclator from Petersen Publishing Co, prolly before Mr. Freiburger was born, tells me your car may have produced 315 hp . You had a weight to power ratio 10.8:1 . Your mph is a little hi but guess you were skating on hi center with those G-60's. Now let me put my teeth back in the water to soak. Ya didn't say what year that was.
Actually I found a date on that slide calculator, 1973!
bilydean Dec 29th, 06, 04:57 PM That would be waaaaaay back in 1979. I did't know how to time the lights, didn't do any burnouts to heat up the tires, and no power braking it. Let it idle and hammer the throttle when it turns green.

Good Old days,, my photo bucket below has some of those.

mkpatrick Dec 31st, 06, 03:16 AM Do you remember the 60' times?
Maybe you didn't have good hook?
114 mph seems like you should have been low 12 high 11 IMO.
bilydean Dec 31st, 06, 01:25 PM I don't remember the 60', but I can guarentee, I didn't hook up well. My reaction time probably sucked as well.

Fordmandan Dec 31st, 06, 02:22 PM Yeah, the MPH for your E.T is really strange. Given the weight of your car you can use either your MPH or E.T to calculate HP. Typically, using MPH is more accurate, but in your case I think some are second guessing your MPH due to the strange elapsed time. A 13.2 and a 104mph would make more sense, but for what its worth....
Using 3450 and 114.5 thats 477 ENGINE HP
Using 3450 and 13.2 thats 350 Engine HP
A 127 hp difference between your E.T and MPH? That's what some are finding a little strange.
I guess if you had a really stout engine, and you smoked them all the way through first and part way through 2nd and then hooked up, maybe you could get a E.T / mph combo like that, but it doesn't happen very often.
FRANK ESKRA Dec 31st, 06, 03:24 PM A 61 Vette with a 12 bolt?? Heck,I thought I wa the only one to do that. I built a 64 Vette in 73 with leaf springs and a 12 bolt. Ran mid 10's with a 337 sbc and a Smokey Ram with the 2x4 top. 114 mph seems to be quite high for your ET.... Moroso makes a pretty accurate calculator.

Reaction What? I dont think there was ever a word like that in the 60's or maybe 70's ,
skintback Jan 1st, 07, 12:47 AM HP estimates are made from mph and not e.t.When you have a good mph and crap e.t it means that it is not 60 worth a darn. You can take the same car and put it on slicks and it run high 11 s but will mph the same.It is also a good way to see if someone is sandbagging at the track. If the car has a good et but real low mph.
mkpatrick Jan 1st, 07, 11:55 AM Yeah, the MPH for your E.T is really strange.

I've been having this sort of problem. I smoke the tires all the way through 1st and into second.
I've tried nursing it out of the hole, I've tried short shifting.
So what I do now is go ahead and get them spinning and flash shift it into 2nd and I get the best 60'. Which is still about 2.4 to 2.6.
My mph is around 115 to 119 and my best ET has been 12.2.
So when I saw this thread, I knew he's having the same trouble as me. I run a BBC.
