First of all what is the stuff at the top of the evaporator box that looks like tar wrapped around the top evaporator line? Also, a line for the expansion valve goes into it. Stuff is tough but still pliable. What is the best way to remove that stuff and what is best to put back? How far does the line that comes from the expansion valve go into the evaporator box along the top line? Want to have my expansion valve rebuilt but not sure how to remove that line. Thanks!

Are you talking about the small 3/16" line from the POA valve (the large valve on the top of the box), or the 1/16" line from the temperature bulb to the expansion valve on the front of the box?
The 3/16" line is part of the evaporator and can not be removed It can only be disconnected from the POA valve. The 1/16" line connected to the expansion valve runs up to the temperature bulb which is strapped to the upper tube of the evaporator and is under that tar like mat. There are two metal straps that hold it to the upper tube. The tar is just insulation to keep the temperature bulb at the same temperature as the evaporator tube. You can slice the tar off with a razor knife, just make a single cut parallel to the evaporator tube and peel the matting off. If you do it neatly you may be able to reuse it, but its also available from most of the Camaro supply companies. Once the tar comes off you will see that any slack in the small tube is just tucked up under the tar matting, it doesn't go inside the fiberglass A/C housing at all.
