hey guys

Ive been annoyed with my current headers up til now.
they rest on the steering box and shake the car badly.
also the ground clearance is really bad.. tired of it now so i was wondering what is the best header that will clear the steering box with good clearance for my SB 406?

its not clearing here.. not my photo but to show where its hitting bad.

some clearance close to this.. these are Thorelys but im not sure if it will work with my 406 i have performer rpm alu heads strait plugs.

Those headers looked just like my Hookers 2451 that I no longer have but they dont look like my Thorleys 376-Y-1 that I am running now with AFR heads with no clearance issues. What size tube are yours? Got a number?

I have headmans on my 408 sbc and they clear my steering box, and don't hang down to much, but I don't have aluminum heads.

Hooker comps here but manual box. They also hang a little lower than those in the pic.

Hedman Elites on my 406,..fit up great. Tried Dynomax,..fit poorly,..too close to the starter, poor spark plug clearance,..but both were ok around the pwr-steering box.

The only problem I had with my Hedmans were the idler arm would hit and dimple one of the primary tubes on the right side of the car if you turned it all the way to the stop. Summit swears these were the correct header for the 68 SBC. Other than that I was very happy with them. They were 1 3/4" primary tubes.

The set I just took off of my 68 SS fit very well and had lots of clearance everywhere. I don't know what brand they are, 1 5/8 primary tubes and the only I.D. I can find on them is 7200 stamped on each flange. Haven't found a manufacturer that carries a part number like that yet.

Both cars were 4 speed cars, no problems clearing any linkages and the Hedmans were on an engine with a Moroso 7 quart kicked out sump oil pan and it had no issues either.

My Hedman elites are all good. They have clearance all the way around.

Jerome I'd like to hear once you've got them on if you have any contact with the idler arm when the wheels are fully turned. My 68RS had this problem. I really liked the Hedmans though and would consider them again if I thought I wouldn't run into this on the 68SS.

Thanks

Hooker comps on a 406 sb. With and with out p/s fit fine with both. Hang a bit low though.

I have Hedman 65003's with a good fit. These are the older 1 3/4 style that have a rectangular port. The newer ones (have an oval port and use the 1 5/8" flange for budget reasons) did not fit and were returned even though they claim to fit.

Dave will post when I get there ,I sure hope hedman and jet hot know what they are talking about, Rick D current 65003 were listed as 1 3/4 anyway will let you all know ...

Yes, hopefully. I bought the set from JetHot uncoated for a trial fit. I didn't care for the 1 3/4" pipe necking down to fit the 1 5/8" flange either.

Jerome my guess is you'll have no issues with them. I haven't talked to anyone else who had their Hedman touch the idler arm. My 68RS was a manual steering car and it just touched it enough at full travel on the steering to put a small dimple in one primary tube. Everything else fit fine. A lot of things can account for that, like motor mounts, proper installation of the steering gear, ect. Something was probably a little of on my RS, but not enough for me to worry about it.
