View Full Version : What is the best aluminum water pump for the money and only street use?????
dubs68camaro Jan 2nd, 07, 08:39 AM I'm building a 396 and want as little chrome on it as possible....trying to go all billet or aluminum. Ebay has a ton of no-name pumps out there. Just curious what's the best for the least out there.
P.S. If I'm running a '66 396 in a '68 Camaro, won't that be a short water pump?? Thanks!!
GM Parts1 Jan 2nd, 07, 09:59 AM Moroso!
TJS69 Jan 2nd, 07, 10:11 AM You will want a short pump. http://www.stewartcomponents.com build the best water pumps IMHO.
Steve69SS396 Jan 2nd, 07, 10:18 AM I've been running an Edelbrock for the last 10 years and Ive been very happy with it. The bearings failed the first year but Edelbrock repaired it at no charge. It's been trouble free for the last 9 years.
FRANK ESKRA Jan 2nd, 07, 03:04 PM Why dont you just buy a Meziere? They do make a street version and makes a very clean application!
JimM Jan 2nd, 07, 03:48 PM I bought a Weiand. Works good, looks good, cools good, cost a lil less than Edelbrock.
Busted Knuckles Jan 2nd, 07, 04:14 PM Stewart, hands down. I've run 'em on everything from street to hot street/strip rides with no issues, plus they look bone-stock.
Larger Dave Jan 3rd, 07, 05:28 AM I think Stewart makes the best pumps (that is all they make, as in it has their full attention, not that is the omly product they make well); I run Edelbrock's on the street because that is who GM buys them from; and if they're good enough for GM they're good enough for me. I have been running four different apps for ten years or longer without a failure.

FRANK ESKRA Jan 3rd, 07, 12:58 PM GM DOES NOT BUY H2O pumps from Edelbrock! Might be the other way around! Like I stated before if you buy a Meziere or even a CSR you eliminate alot of things that rob HP.
JohnZ Jan 3rd, 07, 05:52 PM GM hasn't made aluminum water pumps for small-block V-8's for over 20 years; GM Performance Parts has always bought them from outside suppliers and sold them under GM part numbers.
FRANK ESKRA Jan 3rd, 07, 08:19 PM I got the info I posted from Scoggin-Dickey! I would still buy a Meziere or a CSR street version. I will find out tomorrow by calling a friend that is a long time Edelbrock employee.
Mark .L.W. Jan 3rd, 07, 09:21 PM Edelbrock Victor series here and just love it .

GM Parts1 Jan 4th, 07, 12:43 PM the pump is only to circulate without cavitating at high speeds the radiator and fan do the cooling so don't go broke buying fancy stuff! :)
FRANK ESKRA Jan 4th, 07, 01:34 PM Why run a fan when it robs your engine of almost 12% HP? That equates to a loss of perf. and critical gas mileage at todays prices.
Prelude00782 Jan 4th, 07, 01:40 PM Wait, you are saying my flex fan could be gobbling up as much as 30 hp?
Old baldguy Jan 6th, 07, 10:02 AM I agree with GM1 as they all are going to cool ya down ,you said street use so not to worried about drag, want something that looks good so just depends how much you want to spend . (I try my best to find out were the part is made as do my best to buy american made a lot of our resto. parts from a certain company are made in Taiwan sometimes you just can't get away from it) ,cast iron rebuild from local auto parts will do and paint with brake caliper paint brush on yes brush on flow's good 4 to 5 coats almost spray booth quality,I myself have a Edelbrock alum. short for 12 yrs. no problem's ,sure alum over cast iron and more efficient impeller will flow better and cool over cast very little if no diff.in your guage reading ,maybe got carried away but just spreading some of my knowledge thats fading away in my old baldhead ,good luck and Happy Motoring(as far as flex fan 30 hp you said ,not that much, you are still more efficient than stock w/o clutch...If your not racing why would we be chasing 10 to 20 hp. not really going to feel it...I know we want our car's to handle and perform to the max. of its capabilites, but also we are on the street as in my younger days been through the ticket thing now being 50 and have very good insurance rates ...sorry again got carried away :boring: ....Again Happy Motoring :)
RPOZ28 Jan 6th, 07, 03:22 PM I bought a short aluminum water pump from GM for my 68 chevelle. The part # is 14058915 it has GM and the # cast in to it cost me $120.00. Ed
zdld17 Jan 6th, 07, 03:40 PM Bought Stewart cast steel and painted it cast alumin. Put it on with factory Delco fan clutch and 7 blade fan. Pump has the closed impeller. Done deal.
