View Full Version : Oil Filter Overflow?

I've got a pre-1968 327 (with the old canister-style oil filter) that has been fitted with an after-market spin-on adapter. I recently put a new small Fram filter (the one called for in the parts store catalog) on the car.

I'm in the process of getting the engine together and have been cranking it (to adjust the valves) so I can finally try to start it. While I'm cranking it, I'm getting a whole lot of oil leaking out of where the oil filter seats on the spin-on adapter.

Could this simply be due to using too small a filter? Or could it have something to do with the oil pump? (the oil pan is pretty banged up, but I haven't pulled it). My thinking is that the oil pump must be working, because a lot of oil is going to the oil filter...does that make sense?

Help!

Get a Wix 51060 filter. You should not have any oil leaking.

So it's not uncommon to have oil coming out if you use an oil filter that's too small?

Oil filters should never leak, I had to put a ford filter on my 327 from vavoline.

Check the instructions for the spin-on adapter - there are two types - one uses a Chevy filter, and one uses a Ford filter; use the wrong filter and it'll leak like a sieve.

Like "JohnZ" said, different type adapters use different filter types.
The Trans-Dapt brand sold by Summit uses a "Ford" PH8A type filter with a smaller o-ring diameter.
The Zip Products and Mr.Gasket types use a common GM style, larger 3.5" o-ring dia., type filter. I believe Summit still sells the Mr.Gasket unit at @$8. J.C.Whitney used to carry the 'Zip' brand units for @$5.
I have seen a couple other adapter types over the years, but these are about the most common.

Did you use the seal that goes UNDER the adapter?
