Anyone know the difference on a 327 Small Block that would cause the vendors to put a year designation on the timing cover?
I have a 65 Chevelle 327 in my 63 Nova, I was hoping to go with the Black Chevrolet Crinkle Timing Cover. Classic Industries says its for 69-91 Small Blocks but why? any ideas?

Starting in 1969 the timing mark was offset 10* in the retarded position as compared to earlier timing marks. But the pointer doesn't look like it is attached. Good question.

Gary's got it right. Up through 68 all SBc balancers had timing marks directly aligned with the crank keyway slot in the balancer hub. From 69 on the timing mark was 10 degrees off the crank keyway slot. Timing tabs can come either welded onto the timing cover or be the bolt on style. If welded on you must make sure it is the correct height for the diameter balancer you've got. Other than that restriction the balancers are all interchangable as long as you either have the correct welded tab or use a bolt on tab. GM makes at least four different part number bolt on tabs that I'm aware of. You can also install a timing tape on your balancer to correct for having the wrong cover or tab.

Thanks guys, I've ordered the Proform Black Crinkle Timing Cover since it seems it should fit fine.

Nice looking pieces in the pic there. Refreshing to see something other than chrome or aluminum for a change.

Thats what I'm trying to get away from on my Nova. I don't like so much chrome on the engine. I'll eventually get the valve covers and air filter top as well but since I am changing the camshaft out I wanted to get the timing cover first. Found it on Ebay for $20 + $9 shipping so for $29 I get a nice looking cover with a durable finish. Better way to go in my opinion over sanding and painting a chrome cover.

Hey Brian :Cool looking stuff, I agree I am not into the chrome thing ,going to look good, myself looking into when do my next motor,as current one is not street friendly ,and for about the same price as detuning I can buy a complete long block ,and save motor for another drag project or sell, take care Happy Motoring

To bad the water pump will cover most of it up.
