View Full Version : 68 Grille installation questions
Gideon Sep 11th, 02, 07:51 AM I have a 67, but I like the 68 grille, so after carefull removal and storage of the old one, I am ready to install the 68. Its a standard, and I bought the hardware kits for it, but I was wondering if you guys could tell me which holes the pop rivets go in? I'd appreciate the help.
P.S., don't worry, I changed the hood release.

Gideon Sep 11th, 02, 04:56 PM Hello? Anybody there? This is pretty discouraging... with all the info I've used in the past from this site, I thought I'd at least get a few replies! http://www.camaros.net/forum/confused.gif
Oh well, didn't mean to whine, I just could use the advice.
Thanks,

VINTAGE CAMARO Sep 11th, 02, 06:56 PM You are throwing me off by using pop rivets. As I can remember the 68 grill and trim uses a sandwiching effect to mount them. The trim seems like it has studs mounted to it that accept 1/4-20 nuts. I will have to look tomorrow to be for certain.
cpodeep Sep 11th, 02, 10:49 PM According to the assembly manual it is bolted as described above.

Kyvox Sep 12th, 02, 01:24 AM According to some factory literature, the grille was riveted to the valance panel at the bottom. All of the ones that I've seen have been bolted. There ARE rivets in the side brackets that attach to the headlight mounts.

Gideon Sep 12th, 02, 01:35 AM Thanks for the responses guys.
I thought it was completely bolted on, too. Then I bought the kit and it came with two pop rivets, along with all the clips and screws.

Winch Sep 12th, 02, 04:52 AM My 68 RS grille has been replaced once upon a time and it is riveted to the valance. I was going to remove it but gave up when I saw that. How do you remove those and then should I reinstall with bolts?
djunod Sep 12th, 02, 05:22 AM Mine has no rivets at all. Just remove the screws from the top & bottom (nothing at the sides).

There should be 4 rivets. 2 on each end (the vertical part next to the headlight). See page 138 of the assembly manual.
For the RS grill, it is 13 rivets, 7 on top, 6 on bottom. See page 424 of the assembly manual.

bonecrusher67conv Oct 31st, 02, 11:32 AM Actually those rivet kits are incomplete.
The RS grille needs 13 rivets to attach to the upper and lower molding plus another 8 rivets to attach the lower molding to the lower valance.
So, 21 rivets for 67 RS grille and 22 rivets for a standard 67 grille.
That basically means that the vendor that is selling kits to Ricks and others is incorrect by not supplying the 8 rivets for the lower valance.
djunod Oct 31st, 02, 12:40 PM Not according to the assembly manual. It shows it like I said...

stope4 Oct 31st, 02, 03:23 PM The 68 grille has four rivets. Two for the left side and two for the right side. These are used to attach each side of the grille to a bracket screwed to the headlight housings. Page 138 of the 68 assembly manual shows both, the rivet and bracket.
RamJam Oct 31st, 02, 06:04 PM My question has to be what does it matter if it's true to the assy. manual when it's not the correct grille on a 67 camaro? Just my 2 cents
I have a question that pertains to this some-what. What is the stock black color of the 67 standard grill and outer trim? Flat, Satin, Gloss?
