View Full Version : Loud bang when I punch it =(
Red94 Jan 10th, 07, 09:32 AM I just bought a 94 camaro last night...Everything seemed okay when I test drove it, but last night I was driving and I punched it...and it made a loud bang from underneath the car...It sounded like a bowling ball shot up from the ground and hit the bottom of it! It does that everytime I punch it...Does anyone know what that could be?

robert68 Jan 10th, 07, 09:46 AM Congrats on the Camaro purchase. Tell us more about your car, auto or stick, v-8 or v-6, etc. Where is the noise when you punch it, does it sound like the engine compartment or does it sound like it is coming from under the passenger compartment or does it sound like it is coming from the back of the car. First guess - trans mount or motor mounts. Post some more info and youll prob. get more responses. - Rob
Red94 Jan 10th, 07, 09:51 AM Its a 350 v-8 automatic. The noise sounds like it is coming from the very middle...Maybe a little more towards the front.
Old baldguy Jan 10th, 07, 10:02 AM Red 94 I am not familiar with those computer controlled car's it could be just about any thing with them from the opti spark ,plugs ,clogged cat does any codes come up ,I had a 97 z-28 and really I think you may have better luck at z-28.net…here is the link …good luck and Happy Motoring
67 Plum Jan 10th, 07, 10:02 AM Check the transmission mount. If it is broken the torque arm pushes the trans. up into the floor of the car.

I second that. A friends does the same thing because of the trans mount.
Either that, or you need a tune-up. ;)

3forme Jan 10th, 07, 10:21 AM I would check the transmission mount first, good luck.
Blade Jan 10th, 07, 10:27 AM Check The Read Mite Need New Suspension Bushings
allengator Jan 10th, 07, 10:37 AM My third generation firebird had a "torque arm" running from the rear end to the side of the transmission...
I used to break the mounts at the trans... when I would hit the gas, the torque arm would hit the bottom of the car....
Chevy-SS Jan 10th, 07, 10:40 AM Yeah, I concur on it probably being a bad mount. Put it up on lift, then put in gear, with foot on brake, and rev engine up. You will probably see something move that's not supposed to.
I would also look at all other chassis components while under there. Could be something weird, like broken spring, bad shock, u-joint ready to fall apart, etc, etc......
Nice thing is: it should be easy to spot the problem!

dubs68camaro Jan 10th, 07, 11:16 AM I had a '71 vette with almost the same problem. Because vette's hood open the other way, I was able to see the problem easily. Let me tell you....when your are not expecting that, it can be quite a site to see your motor almost come out of the car!!
The only problem is that depending on hood clearance, I think you would probably hear that problem more when you let off the gas and it slams back onto the pad rather than it hitting the hood. East fix though.....just get a friend to stand in front of the car with the hood open and do the old "gas and brake" at the same time. That will tell for sure if it's a broken motor mount.
madmax87 Jan 10th, 07, 11:21 AM Friends 97 Camaro did it too. Transmission mount. Sounded likke it was coming thru the floor.

I second that one. It happened to me. He's right, its very alarming to see the engine come up at you!!
But the sound mine made was more of a thump.
clwilcox33 Jan 10th, 07, 12:34 PM I vote trans mount first, and left engine mount second.
Bowtie68 Jan 10th, 07, 02:24 PM I second checking the tranny mount. Get a large crow bar and see if you can lift the tranny up at all at the mount. If you see light through the rubber then you know whats shot.
Had the same thing happen in my 95 TA.
clwilcox33 Jan 10th, 07, 02:27 PM Let's keep this limited to one thread please. Red, welcome to Team Camaro. In the future, please only post a question in one forum. Thanks!

rookie68camaro Jan 10th, 07, 02:33 PM Also check your motor mounts.
dnult Jan 11th, 07, 03:10 PM Do you think it's a back-fire or a mechanical clunk of some sort. The reason I ask is if the AIR injection system stays on, you'll get all sorts of sputters and pops. When the car warms up the AIR system should divert to exahaust through a muffler of sorts in the air system plumbing. I'm more inclined to think it is a tranny mount or something, but the AIR system can be an obscure problem to find so I thought I'd offer it.
dawg Jan 11th, 07, 04:01 PM its your tranny mount bushing
newageoutlaw Jan 19th, 08, 08:55 PM its definitely your trans mount...i broke my second one last week after only having it on for a month.
wiskeesour Jan 20th, 08, 02:24 AM Check the transmission mount. If it is broken the torque arm pushes the trans. up into the floor of the car.
Dont bother with anything else. this is your problem. NOTORIOUS on these cars. Especially if its been under a heavy foot. :D
Easy fix. I fixed mine in the driveway.
class67 Jan 20th, 08, 09:49 PM Trans. mount!!! it happened on mine as well.
clwilcox33 Jan 21st, 08, 06:26 AM This post is over 1 year old. I'm SURE he's got it figured out by now.
LT1RUNNER Jan 21st, 08, 09:25 AM Yup! Trans mount!!!
Detector Mar 3rd, 08, 09:50 AM I just bought a 1994 Camaro doing the same thing. Too me it sounds like something hitting the floor about a foot or so behind my shifter in the middle. About at the back of the console. I was thinking it's probably a trany mount.
Only happens when I give it the gas pretty quickly
