View Full Version : 67 shimmy's above 63 mph
Aaron67Coupe Jan 12th, 07, 08:06 AM OK Guys. Have a question. My 67 shimmys or vibrates after i hit about 63 MPH. It happens for about one second out of every six seconds. i can feel it in the steering wheel and in the seat especially, and when i get about 70+ it really starts shaking pretty hard, but for only one second then it doesnt for about five seconds. as long as i keep it below 63, it doesnt shake at all. what could this be. ive asked some buddies and some suggested wheels need balancing, some suggested front end alignment, some suggested timing issue. i just dont know exactly where to start. have any of you had this problem? any suggestions would be great!
Thanks!!
onovakind67 Jan 12th, 07, 08:16 AM I would start by ensuring that all the wear parts are in good condition, including bushings, joints, idler and pitman arms, shocks, tires, etc. Make sure the tires are well balanced for the speeds you travel.
Straight-line-69 Jan 12th, 07, 09:03 AM Agree with the above. I'd first look at steering linkage,..idler and rod ends. Jack the front end up,..crawl under and watch the steering linkage as a friend wiggles one of the tires with his hands at 3 and 9:00 on the tire. Then do the other tire. You may be able to see some play in your steering linkage.
Good luck.
Lost in the 60's Jan 12th, 07, 09:27 AM Wheel bearings....all 4. Pinion bearings. Usually a loose steering component won't come and go....a steering shimmy usually gets worse until you slow down.
tumper Jan 12th, 07, 09:33 AM What brand tire are you running, size tire? Are they new, old? When did this begin?
JimM Jan 12th, 07, 11:13 AM haha, almost funny. my 68 does this too. It is a VERY slight cyclic vibration that I feel in the seat of my pants not in the wheel. Comes and goes exactly like you said, and does not get any worse with speed. I've been ignoring it.
This winter she'll have a new rear, new driveshaft, rebuilt (again) front suspension, new front wheel bearings and 4 disk brakes rather than 4 drums, and new front tires. I'm hoping it will be gone after all this, but not holding my breath.
Aaron67Coupe Jan 12th, 07, 11:19 AM I will be going through the front end of it in the coming weeks. I am not going to ignore it, persay, but i will pay more attention to it after i get it painted and put some new tires on it (firestone firehawk). i am running cheap tires that came on the car right now, which may be part of the problem.

davidpozzi Jan 12th, 07, 04:13 PM A member went through a whole lot of troubleshooting of a high speed vibration and finally found out his lower balljoint was loose in the A arm.
I'm not saying that's your problem, but first check the suspension, then check the wheels and tires.
go2fast Jan 12th, 07, 09:25 PM You might want to bring the engine up to the same RPM while sitting still in neutral. Just to rule out an engine balance problem.
RS3SDL2MG Jan 13th, 07, 08:17 AM funny every camaro I have had did this , on my current 67 I replaced ALL suspension wear part's ball joints tie rod ends shock's coil springs sway bar bushings subframe bushings EVERYTHING !! it made no difference ,,,
but I did find out what it was ,,,,,,, I have had rally wheel's on all my camaro's and last year I put my standard steel wheels with the full hubcap's on the car and put new white wall radial tires ,,,,,,AT 80MPH YOU CAN DRIVE IT WITH ONE FINGER !!! shimmy was GONE !
I have five rally wheel's and figured they were the cause so I put them on a wheel turn alignment jig I made and found that they are not straight ,,checked all five and all were slightly off , I put one of the steel wheel's in the jig and it was perfectly straight ,, also a friend of mine bought some new repo rally wheel's I checked those and they were slightly out too ,
I bought one rally off ebay two week's ago and it is slightly off ,,
so to me the rally wheel's are the cause , now I have put a new set of the firestone redline tires on my rally wheel's from coker tire they are repo's of the original bias ply tires the car's had when new and they will without a doubt cause the shimmy when I drive it with the rally wheel's but the look is so that I don't care !!!
