View Full Version : 69 Z11 Pace Car 396
nantuckett 67 Jan 16th, 07, 02:26 PM I've been trying to save this car for years now. The lady lets it sit outside, Last year I went there with $20K cash from the sale of my rs/ss coupe. Kids freaked out, but she wouldn't sell. Single mom, bought the car from original owner in Indiana about 20 years ago, then moved out here to Northern California. Car's got 39K original miles, 396/325 with 4-spd. Original paint, couple of dings. Everything appears original. No rust (yet), lots of mildew smell inside. Very cool car. She has a pretty good idea of what it's worth, but I feel I almost had her with a two-inch stack of hundreds! My research shows that it was probably on the track in 69 for one reason or another. Super rare, and it kills me to have this car sitting less than 5 miles from my house.
If someone can tell me how to post a picture of the car I will.
36j1967 Jan 16th, 07, 02:50 PM If the car has the original drivetrain and everything checks out as original and restorable 20K wont do it. Thats not to say if she were unaware of the current value or hit a rough financial spot you might not get lucky and land it for that money. I paid $25K for my L34/M20 Z11 project car five years ago. I would say something solid and complete that needed a complete restoration would start around 30K these days if it is what it is.
Mike69X66 Jan 16th, 07, 02:57 PM If the car was on the track and it is solid in need of only a light restoration I would say it is worth closer to 50k the way it sets.
3forme Jan 16th, 07, 02:58 PM Take her a car cover and plastic tarp. It will show you truly care about the car not to mention hiding it from everyone else! I know of a car just like you describe but the lady drives that baby everywhere (in No Cal also) but s/b I think.
Mike69X66 Jan 16th, 07, 03:12 PM Great idea.
shaugs Jan 16th, 07, 04:07 PM If the car was on the track and it is solid in need of only a light restoration I would say it is worth closer to 50k the way it sets.
I agree on the above statement, 50K based on your description.
36j1967 Jan 16th, 07, 08:54 PM It will be tough to place it as a festival car unless its on the short list of vins documented for BB's used at the Indy 500. My POP with my car has it delivered to Bob Baker Chevrolet in Indianapolis on May 13th, 1969 but I cant place it any closer to the gates of IMS than that.
nantuckett 67 Jan 17th, 07, 08:13 AM I think that's a swell idea with the cover and tarp. I really do think I would've walked drove away in it with the 20K, but her son who's still "getting his #^$#*& together" really wants it and has wanted it ever since he wasn't a knucklehead, so she actually tried to get a hold of him at that time but couldn't. I finally left and then waited for her call, never happened.
I would definately put this car $40-50K, given the minimal work needed and the value of the completed resto. Just wish I had those kind of beans.
There are only two other "Camaro guys" in the area that I know of who know about the car and have made $$ offers years back.
I'll be on my way to get that cover and tarp!
nantuckett 67 Jan 17th, 07, 08:33 AM here's a lousy pic from my cell phone.

Jonesy Jan 17th, 07, 09:16 AM $20K is a lowball offer in todays market. $35K may get the car. Thats if it is in the condition you describe.
KevinK7 Jan 17th, 07, 10:53 AM ...not trying to 'hijack' this thread, ...but what is the going (ballpark) price for a SB '69 pacer (some rust, mostly original, ...needing full resto)?
...I think the tarp idea is a good one, ...hope it works out for you, ...keep us posted.
Indy Z11 Jan 17th, 07, 03:21 PM Oh no, look at all those bicycles! Get a padded car cover.
68camaroz28 Jan 17th, 07, 05:24 PM Nantucket, know what you mean about "bean" thing but if I can pass one thing to you, if you can offer a more really fair price you both could be winners. Too many times I said the same thing only to kick myself years later for letting something slip by, and I wish that does not happen to you. Wish you luck.
Pacecarjeff Jan 17th, 07, 06:06 PM If you increase your offer too dramatically - you will spook her.
Take it slow, and try to find out what it will take to buy it.
Tell her a story about it being your dream car.
If you start making a big deal, she will start asking around.
Just check in, every couple of weeks. Cover the car - fill the tires, ect.
68camaroz28 Jan 17th, 07, 06:24 PM Good points Jeff! Sounds like you have had some practical experience my friend. Smooth, very smooooooth.
68SSCamaroinKS Jan 17th, 07, 06:44 PM Why don't you just ask the gal to marry you?
