View Full Version : rusty inside panels
hifromgeorge Dec 19th, 04, 11:02 AM I just finished removing the door panels, and headliner. Though I haven't found any rust on the outside of the car, there is rust on the floor panels, and inside the rear quarters, behind where the sail panels are at. I cant really get in there to sand, and I don't believe that I could eliminate it by sand blasting the area. Are there any reccomendations on how to rmove this, or does it really matter? I am sure that eventually this rust will work its way thru.
Thanks in advance, George
click Dec 19th, 04, 11:15 AM Welcome to Team Camaro George, take a trip thru my trunk section and I bet you see what you have, same as mine. Short of taking off everything, I used POR-15 after light sanding as far as I could reach. Then a top coat of splatter and hope it holds for several years. New guy buys the beer too smile.gif

hifromgeorge Dec 19th, 04, 11:40 AM Thanks Jim for the reply, I really can't get my hands in there to sand as there is just a big enough hole to get my fingers in there. But with the por15, I believe that they have a rust inhibiter that I can spray in there. The way that I understand, that this should block the rust from spreading, Is this true? By the way, here's your beer, and I think I will join ya!! graemlins/beers.gif
Geezer Dec 19th, 04, 04:38 PM If you want to get rid of ALL the rust, here you go! http://www.redi-strip.com/ Your gonna need lots a boxes to put all the parts in…. We had a Redi Strip here in the 80’s I was their third customer, had a whole car dipped as well as the hood, deck lid, doors, hard top, and all of the nuts and bolts. Every thing came out like new metal.
RickD Dec 20th, 04, 01:43 AM I used Eastwood's spray rust encapsulator in those areas. It's held up fine for 4 years now.
JimM Dec 20th, 04, 03:04 AM If the por15 rust inhibitor you're talking about is a product called "METAL-READY", I would NOT use it in an enclosed area. It is a conbination acid based rust revomver /etch / zinc based coating. It leaves a white residue that must be completely cleaned off prior to applying any coating. Directions read to scrub / flush it with lots of water to get the residue off.
Codi Dec 20th, 04, 04:12 AM I used a "rust remover" I got at AutoZone. It came in jars (not navel jelly) and I put it in a spray bottle. I sprayed the are to death, until it ran out and stained my floor. It appeared white until it dried, then clear, like a coating. The surface rust appeared black and I have had no problems.
