: Why do people cut the 'ears' on the front subframe?

Out of the 3 68s I have, I think 2 if not all 3 have the front frames cut in the same spot.

I dont have a pic now, but I'll try to describe. The front, on both sides of the subframe right around where the radiator mounts, there are 2 big holes that are supposed to be there. They are maybe 2-3" in diameter, they face each other(on the inside of each 'arm' of the front sub.

Anyway, Previous owners/mechanics have cut(torch) from each circle, to the diagonal bottom front.

This is really hard to describe w/ out a picture. im sure some of you have run into the same thing.

Does anybody understand my description :D , and know why anybody would do this?

It sounds like a factory or dealer mod IMO, since all your cars have this. I'll check my car tomorrow morning.

well they are very sloppy looking with slag and stuff all over, very rough over all. Looks like very amatuer jobs, but nothing makes sense as to why people would do this

My 67 is the same way, I assumed the previous owner had chopped them off for a towbar possably?
Mine is cut a little (from front) before the core support mounts. Purchased one from a nova to replace it.

I don't know, Jeff. I was asking Sad about his car because a good friend of mine owned a 67 convertible and lived in Ohio. He also cut his frame to make way for a tow bar. I just thought maybe by some slim chance Sad has my friend's old 67..It was a "sad" car too..Maybe these guys were going without front bumpers and didn't want the frame horns showing for a cleaner look...that's my guess though I have no idea.

I was glancing thru an assembly manual the other day and something caught my eye that I thought of when I read this post. I remember seeing something about a factor "tie-down" notation for delivery purposes. Could this have been the result of something that was removed after the cars were delivered to their destination?

Kwik, not on mine, it has actually been torched off and has eliminated the bumper mount bolt hole in the front. I wouldnt think they would hang the bumper bracket with just the rear bracket bolt??? I think this is just the result of either tow bars or the other possablity of a cleaner look without the front bumper on. I'ts alot more common than I thought though judging from this thread.

My understanding is this. Very early 1967 subframes did not have a hole in the frame but was later added to gain access to bumper bracket mountin bolts. This was a running change and some cars actually came from the factory with one side having the factory hole and the other side did not. It is likely someone torched the hole into your frame to gain access to these rusted and hard to reach bumper bracket bolts.
