Would there be a date range that 041 and 041x heads were used in 69 on a 302? I know the 186 is the most popular (and expensive) head on the 302 but mortec lists the 044/044x as 302 heads as well. I am guessing this would be late production due to the failure rate of the 186 . Would this be correct?

Thanks

Brian, Pretty sure that 041 heads were used on SS350 cars only, Z28,s all used 186,s. I know that might bring some argument, but i have taken a ton of Z cars apart in the last 35 years and they all had 186,s. MacNeish,s book also verifys 186,s as being the only head used on the Z28 i believe.
Not sure what you mean regarding failure rate of 186,s? The 186 head was also used in 1970 on the Z28 and Corvette.
Hope this helps.

I have ben told that the rocker studs were known for pulling on these heads and that many of them had to be replaced under warranty. I had the same thoughts on the 186 but read it on mortec that they were used on 302. Just thinking it may be easier and cheaper to come up with 044's. I do want to be as correct as possible with the car.

It has been stated here several times there are no known heads used other than 186's.

Good point, probably why 70 186 heads had screw in studs and guideplates.

Brian, if your looking for 186 heads try - http://www.tracyvette.com/headssb.html

They seem to have lots with different dates.
Hope this helps. Mike.

Use straight shank studs from Pioneer. They look like press-in studs when done.

I have used these studs, Mr. Gasket still makes these as well.
Only problem is you have to be carefull that the pushrods guide slots are not worn, as it cocks the rocker if they are. Also be very carefull when torquing these studs, they can crack the rocker boss if the boss is not counterbored ever so slightly for the small shoulder at the base of the stud.
