View Full Version : coupe to vert body swap
chrisp1 Jan 27th, 07, 09:38 PM Anyone have any info or experience with a coupe to vert body swap. I'm considering purchasing one of the vert bodys that classic industries sells and transforming my coupe. (Haven't got a chance to call them yet)
since everything for my coupe is in excellent condition, what other parts would I need besides whats on the coupe.
I know I need a top and trim, thats odbvious, but what else....will the doors swap over? etc etc.....
thanks for the help

1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jan 27th, 07, 10:08 PM A convertible has a completely different floorpan than a hardtop, more support built in since there's no roof.

Yes, most major components are the same.
If your coupe is really solid, I wouldn't part it out to make a convertible replica. You would be better off using a rust bucket for misc. parts and all new body parts.
shoddy_F-body Jan 28th, 07, 07:09 AM All the bolt on body parts are the same. Quarter glass is different. Rear interior panels and rear seat are different.
Mark C Jan 28th, 07, 07:48 AM Vin and cowl tag numbers are different, if your planning to swap the VIN and Trim tag over. You will take a huge beating on price if you try to sell a convertible with a VIN from a coupe.

Just kicking the idea around right now.
I didn't think about the VIN, but maybe the new body comes with a VIN? I'll find out Monday.
So other then a few rear interior parts I should be o.k.?
shoddy_F-body Jan 28th, 07, 11:19 AM Windshield and moldings are different. Get a catalog and go through it and see what parts have different #'s for coupe vs convertible. Should give you a good idea.
bearcat44 Jan 28th, 07, 11:34 AM the bodies DO NOT come with a vin. Also, check out your states laws as you may have to do a little manuevering to be legal. I believe that some states outlaw vin swapping (could be wrong).
trentonZ28 Jan 28th, 07, 12:37 PM Ohio is real picky about the vehicles vin tag, I wouldn't swap it and be able to sleep at night.
3speed400 Jan 28th, 07, 02:18 PM How about a refurbished convertible body from Tony at Musclecar Metal, http://www.musclecarmetal.com/refurb.htm . He tears the shells down and reskins the entire thing using a very conplex jig, and Ive this thing in person and it is amazing. Most of his shells include a VIN, at the same price as the Dynacorn bodies.
Heres some pics of some of the great work he does:

This sounds like a much better idea then going the other route.
