My 69 camaro has a flowmaster exhuast the exits at the back of the car. Since the exhuast exits at the rear, there are some black spots on the body right above the exhaust. What is the best way to remove those carbon deposits without harming the paint? I just bought the car about a two months ago and they have been there since I bought the car.

Sounds like some oil residue from your exhaust if it puffs smoke on start up maybe. I had black spots real bad from leaky rear main seal on my engine, the oil sprayed back along the under side and then got lifted up across the tail panel by the back up lights. It usually washed off with Dawn dish soap for me. Road tar type, thicker pieces of gunk can be removed with WD-40 but do not rub hard, let it disolve the spot then softly wash off the residue with Dawn. That should protect your finish without using harsh chemicals. Im sure others will post some ideas too. You might also try a search as Im sure its been discussed here many times.
Good luck

I too have had good results with WD-40. Remember to let the solvent do it's job ( let it soak and penetrate ) and don't try to 'add muscle' to hasten the results.
