: Fuel pump problem? (95 Firebird)
Today I got into my car and it just cranked over without starting..Sprayed starting fluid in her and she started up but stalled out. Checked the Schrader (sp?) valve on the fuel rail and had no fuel pissing out of it (Key was on)....15 amp fuse was good and the AutoZone guys even gave me a new fuel relay to see if that was the problem, didnt help.....I let the car sit for 1/2 hour, cranked it and she started right up and ran great.
I spoke to my mechanic at work and he says that it's an indication the fuel pump is on its way out.
Has anyone had this kind of problem with there fuel pump?
kustomwerker Jan 29th, 07, 05:06 PM check the filter first...usually you can hear the pump for a few sec`s when u first turn the key on...could be the pump, butusually when they quit, they dont come back...
I've heard just the opposit...When they overheat they quit working but once they cool down it works normally?
I'm ready to take this car for a long drive on a short pier!

I am not going to try to troubleshhot the fuel problem from a distance but ........
Pleeeeeeeeese throw the starting fluid in the trash can where it belongs. Do the words "bent rods" make you think there is a better place for it ? If you have to use something, use Gumout carb cleaner. It does the same thing when troubleshooting fuel problems, without the risks.

Starting fluid is no good?
Why is that?
kustomwerker Jan 29th, 07, 08:29 PM it has a much more violent burn than gasoline...has the tendancy of igniting under much lower heat source...(like compression)has the tendancy of washing oil off of cyl walls, bending rods, puffing heads on high compression stuff...ever heard a diesel that wasnt designed for eather light off on it???really bad rattle you heard???and diesels have much heavier parts...point is, eather isnt real good for gas engines in excess...you have to be really sparing with it if you use it, and you shouldnt need it at all if you know correct ways of diagnosing things...i realize that sounds like a slap, but its absolutely not!!!!diagnostic prowess comes from years of experiance, and i too am still learning correct ways of diagnosing things...

mkpatrick Jan 30th, 07, 11:01 AM So what is a good way to trouble shoot for vacuum leaks?
68Lemans blue Jan 30th, 07, 11:31 AM Your mechanic is correct,( you mite be lucky, and be the filter), they will work as he stated ,the problem is, it's gets old and build's up to much resistance get's hot and quit's ,you will only get a time or two maybe three out of it, then you hope you are home or at your mechanic's shop so you aren’t stranded and got a couple hundred towing bill ,as my buddy did, got two times out of his and that was it, not a bad job in his 92 chev truck even though he had 3/4 tank gas ,it's quite a job in the 4th gen camaro….Good luck and Happy motoring ( Hi Mike Carb cleaner is much safer for trobleshooting)
Glooscap Jan 30th, 07, 11:32 AM man, my camaro was doing the exat same thing, it would run great then out of the blue it would just die and wouldn't start. i'd definitly try your egnition module, thats your little black box under distributor cap. it only takes a few minutes to do. it took me 2 weeks to find the problem.
it done this to me a few times and left me stranded a couple times too. i go back the next day and bam it starts right up again. my car would start for a second and stall over and over and over.ect.
68Lemans blue Jan 30th, 07, 02:04 PM The dist. or as it's called on 4th gen camaro's and firebird's optispark is behind the waterpump, different than 2nd and 3rd gen camaro's and when they go bad you can still limp home,so I don't think thats his problem. I am stayin with fuel pump ....nothing intended just F Y I ...Happy Motoring
