View Full Version : Best new BB radiator
Chevy-SS Jan 29th, 07, 07:28 AM I've got a '68 with 454; mild build, (roller cam, alum heads, headers, DFI, etc) about 525hp, 4-speed, street car only - no drag.
Anyway, my 4-core radiator is leaking a little, plus it will overheat at times, so I'm wondering what you guys might recommend for a decent radiator that will bolt right in. I try to keep things fairly stock-appearing under the hood, I'm using original fan and shroud. Alum radiator would be OK though.
All recommendations appreciated.
thanks
italiano362 Jan 29th, 07, 07:52 AM If you want to keep it stock go with a Alumitech. They are aluminum but appear stock. Do a search and you will come up with alot of info.

Chevy-SS Jan 29th, 07, 10:06 AM Don,
Thanks for the link. Is this the radiator I should use? It looks nice in aluminum finish, but if I chose to paint it, is that OK or does it make the engine run hotter?
Also, is it OK to use the stock fan/shroud setup?
And my last question is regarding chassis flex. The Camaro has some up front, that's why they used the rubber mounts (as we all know). Does this radiator require any special mounting to prevent flex damage?
thanks

MarkM Jan 31st, 07, 08:45 AM Check Summit. They have a direct fit al. radiator that looks just like the one you have pictured for $200 less.

Thanks, but at $450, the Summit radiator is not much cheaper, unless I am looking at wrong one.............. Plus, the Alumitech piece looks nicer.

Chevy-SS Jan 31st, 07, 12:40 PM Ahhh, that is a small-block radiator though................

MarkM Feb 1st, 07, 10:25 AM Why wouldn't it work with a BB car?

I am assuming it does not, otherwise they would have listed it as BB compatible. There certainly ARE differences in core size between SB and BB radiators...........

True! I made that mistake. Big blocks need a big radiator. I bought the Griffin aluminum from Summit. It has the mounting tabs for the shroud at the bottom of the tanks. As far as the mounting brackets, I cut them off. I use a tray in my 69. Built it 25 years ago to avoid that horrible mounting system. Oh, the Griffin is rated at 600 hp, or so. Here's mine;

Chevy-SS Feb 1st, 07, 12:24 PM Fred, I gotta admit, I don't like the mounting system either. Lots of problems with supports separating from radiators. Happened to a buddy of mine with a '69 like yours.
I like the look of the Alumitech piece. I guess I was just trying to stay away from too much chrome and aluminum under the hood. But, since I've already got DFI, ceramic-coated headers and alum heads, what's the difference?? LOL, at this point I've got your basic "resto-mod"................
