View Full Version : starter problems
84camaroinprogress Jan 29th, 07, 05:04 PM i cant figure out what is wrong i just bought the starter, well its from autozone, the hd offroad sealed 120$ one is all they had for my 327, my problem is i had a starter off of a 305 motor on it and it just wouldnt crank for crap, the only way it would start would be with jumper cables, well finally the nose cone broke on that one, i bought the new one which is twice the size of the old one and put it on, i shimmed it, well not with the 1/8th rod but i had some shimms and had to put one on, the starter was quite for about 20 to 25 starts, it sat for about a month then i tried to start it in 20deg weather, it started twice and died then the third the starter cranked real loud and barely cranked over then all i heard was the starter motor running, got under there and the cone was cracked. OMG im about to go insane, does autozone sell just nose cones and why is this happening, my flywheel has perfect looking teeth on it, is it cus its not shimmed properly, its a 11 to 1 motor can these stock starters not hold up to compression, it started great with this big starter.
kustomwerker Jan 29th, 07, 05:14 PM try a jegs mini starter....much better product for the application...11 to 1 is much higher than todays cars, and the starters just arent made like they used to be...which flexplate do u have...the 168 would be better for your application also...that might be why you keep tossing nosecones...they also have a brace that bolts to the back of the starter, and block to keep the starter from twisting and(u guessed it) blowing nosecones off...
84camaroinprogress Jan 29th, 07, 05:39 PM  how do you tell which flexplate i have besides counting the teeth:D, that would really suck, as for the jegs starter i just might have to look into that, i know some starters are listed with which compression ratio the application is for, the teeth on the flexplate look really close together if that helps identify it
84camaroinprogress Jan 29th, 07, 05:41 PM the starter was also very tight i checked it after it broke just to make sure i didnt screw that up also haha, i have a tendency of doing things half*** haha
kustomwerker Jan 29th, 07, 05:45 PM i believe, but dont quote me, that the starter with the straight bolt pattern has the 168, but i`ll see if i can do some quick research to confirm...but in all honesty, it wouldnt matter which flexplate you used if you went with a ministarter...i had the same prob with a 65 chevelle with a 12.5 to 1 327...mini solved it right away....
84camaroinprogress Jan 29th, 07, 05:57 PM ahh i c my starter has the staggered bolt pattern, i cant remember if the block has a bolt pattern for straight bolt pattern, do all blocks have both or not
kustomwerker Jan 29th, 07, 06:02 PM yaeh they do... the mini is a straight patt that will bolt right up...
84camaroinprogress Jan 29th, 07, 06:11 PM thanks for all your help will the starter come with new bolts if i remember correctly doesnt the straight and staggered have diff length bolts, im probably wrong their probably the same, if they are diff lengths and the jegs starter doesnt come with bolts i will have to aquire some
kustomwerker Jan 29th, 07, 06:16 PM it comes with new bolts and shims
