I picked up a 67 Firebird that is far from original. It currently has a chevy 350. My problem is that there is a leak from the larger (pressure??) hose fitting at the steering box. I put teflon tape around the fitting but it still leaked.

Since the motor has been swapped I don't know what is original on the car - the pump and hose or steering box. The casting # on the steering box is 5691676. But from what I've read, these boxes came with different style fittings (o-ring, flared, inverted). I honestly can't tell which style I have.

Any ideas? Can anyone tell me what adapter or hose sizes I should look for?

Thanks.

The gear should have a female port with 11/16-18 thread and a 45 degree inverted flare fitting. You need to determine where the leak is occuring. It could be that the hose pipe with its 45 degree flare could be cracked. That would mean that you just need a new pressure hose.

You also need to determine if the power steering pump has a male or a female fitting. Before 1970 the Chevrolet pump had a male fitting. From 1970 until 1979 the Chevrolet pumps had a female 5/8-18 threaded port with a 45 degree inverted flare. Since you have a Chevrolet engine I would think that a pressure hose designed for a Camaro with a V8 should fit your Firebird.
