: mono to multi
ace's68 Feb 1st, 07, 06:39 PM so i will be switching from mono to multi leaf springs on a 68' camaro, i read up on this in the search section of team camaro and found the 5 leaf springs on classic industries. it reads: "Original single rear leaf springs can be replaced with multi leaf springs by simply replacing the U-bolts and adding shock extenders which allow the springs to set correctly." is this all i will need to complete the conversion? and another ?, it mentioned this: "Front shackle bushings are pre-installed in all rear leaf springs." do i need any bushings for the rear? and are the shock extenders fine thread or coarse tread?
thanks.
pdq67 Feb 1st, 07, 06:52 PM Yes, you will need rear bushings. And I'd buy a set of poly pads too. You may have to trim their side lips off???
I have done this already and since I don't "D-o-H" my car, I haven't worried about shock extensions....
Last time I "D-o-H'd" my car, I flew over a RR crossing, went airborne and almost lost my oil pan!! NO MORE for this ol' Poor-Boy!!

ace's68 Feb 1st, 07, 07:03 PM LOL. i was thinking of the poly pads aswell since they will most likley be withered. why wouldnt i need shock extension? so u bolts, rear spring bushings, and poly pads is all i need? this is way easier than i thought!
Ghostbuster Feb 1st, 07, 09:54 PM I bought that same Classic Industries ad..
I went with 5 leafs, and had to request the multi-leaf kit with 4-U-bolts.
They sent the wrong ones, and had to swap, (what a pain)..
I didn't like the idea of shock extenders, so I took before and after measurements,
then bought the correct shocks (monroe sensitrack) for this new distance.
They biggest issue I ran into was my mono-perch, (welded to axle).
I'm running with an 1.5" gap on my U-bolts, until I can find a nice 3:55 posi.
I do not recommend the 5-leaf, (too tall and too stiff).
IMO - The 3-leaf is a better swap..
68Lemans blue Feb 2nd, 07, 07:42 AM A J here is a link to Hotchkis call the tech dept and talk to Drew Oliver as he helped me and was very willing and will set you up with what you need , no guessing no getting the wrong hardware there R & D car was a mono car and it is his personnel car, call him first before you buy,I did and an happy as punch…I got the whole shabang T V S kit (shocks too no need for shock extenders unless you are on a budget) but I have seen the shock extenders break and cut a tire to shreds…Hope it helps and always Happy Motoring http://www.hotchkis.net
ace's68 Feb 2nd, 07, 04:37 PM thanks for the info, i was wondering how the car would sit with the 5 leaf springs vs. the 3 or 4 cause the place that i orderd my rims from i believe has the wrong backspacing, with the p255 tire and mono's it rubs when you hit a bump, or maybe i could roll the lip in the quarter to avoid this until they order new correct rims. how high could i expect it to sit with 3 vs. 4 vs.5 leaf springs? taking inches between quarter and tire distance. i have been thinking about the hotchkis kit and i would like to lower the car but now i want to keep normal height cause of the rear but slightly drop the front, and i cant find any hotchkis TVS kit that sells normal ride height leaf's.
68Lemans blue Feb 2nd, 07, 05:29 PM Wow what backspace you running, 3 leafs droped my car 1.5 from stock mono.. I have 4 1/2 backspace on 15 in rim 235/60 tire plenty of room ,I could do 255 no prob....Good luck and Happy Motoring
ace's68 Feb 2nd, 07, 07:50 PM im not sure back spacing is prob 5". did you get drop leaf springs? if anything i need to raise the rear.
68Lemans blue Feb 3rd, 07, 08:35 AM Morning AJ 255-60 is a 28 in dia and stock is 26 dia.tire and 5 in b/s I think is a little much with that tire, most guys doing the 17 and 18 in wheels with 4 to 5 in b/s are using a 26 in dia tire with no problem ,the prob. is dia. of tire 28in and 5 in b/s,I think if you go 5 leafs you will be sitting to high and may still rub with your combo.I have been through this with much wider tires, drag slicks 10.5-29.5 and D O T legal E T streets 12.5-30 dia with 8 1/2 wide 5 in b/s stock hight mono ,but also had to use wheel spacers 3/8 in outboard. If you go 3 to 4 leafs you may want to eather space tire or use a smaller dia tire 225 is 26 dia or 235 is almost 27dia. I hope this helps ,as stated above I am running 8in rim 4.5 b/s with 225-60 26 dia. plenty room with 3 leafs...Again hope this helps and Happy Motoring :)
