Are you sure it's a U? I'm definitely not a Muncie expert but I believe the letters in the serial or VIN number are "P" for the 4 speed made at the Muncie plant or M for the 3 speed. Other alpha characters are for the month it was made, so they would only be the first 12 characters (A to T) of the alphabet. I found this stuff out today as I'm decoding my Muncie to get ready to sell it. Lots of info out there on the various markings. If I've stated something incorrectly someone will speak up.
Yeah Carl, there's usually 2 seperate stamped codes on a transmission case; 1) a trans code and 2) a partial VIN. Sounds like you've got the trans code down. The "U" as mentioned above, is part of the partial VIN....the plant where the car was built.
Nothing says it's a Muncie except what the original poster wrote.
