Help with alternator conversion (car won't shut off)...

Well... I did the conversion that I found in the tech ref section: http://www.camaros.net/techref/ftecref14.html

I know I did not wire it wrong (at least not according to the tech ref). I wanted a cleaner engine compartment and I'm just so nit picky, so I removed the blue wire altogether, and re-routed the brown wire (just like the author of the tech ref). Anyways... to keep it simple... if I pull off the brown wire it works fine. If I have the brown wire connected then it won't shut off. I know the brown wire is a resistor wire that used for the gen light. I did not cut the wire whatsoever, just rerouted. I am running a complete MSD ignition setup. I'm using the 6A box with the MSD 3 coil. The alt is an Autolite PRO-TECH 7273. Could the alt have different terminals? Would it hurt if I try to put the brown wire on the #2 instead of the #1 terminal?

I knew of someone who had the same problem and they claim it was because of the MSD but I don't remember what they did to solve it.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Ohayden

If you converted to a single wire alternator I think you need to add a diode to one of you wires. The diode is like a one way valve for electricity. I had the same problem and the diode fixed it. It's been too long to rember which wire. Do a search or go to Mad Electronics, they have an explaination for this situation and will tell you what size diode you need.

Great... that will be easy to fix. I read their install instructions and it's saying to use a 100v 1a diode with the band pointing towards the alt. So should I use a 400 or a 100 volt diode?

I will try it today! Thanks!

Go with the 400 PIV diode. The 100 will work but some of their techs have been recommending a bigger size. If Radio Shack doesn't have a 1 amp, you can always go bigger (2 amp).

Thanks BTC and John_Muha. That did the job. Radio Shack didn't have a 100 or 400 volt in stock so I got a 200 volt 1 amp diode and installed it and voila it actually turns off now with the key in the off position

Now my engine compartment looks cleaner and I now have an up-to-date alternator w/an internal voltage regulator. All around good deal!

Thanks again,
Ohayden
