Default Saginaw and Hurst shifter ina 69

I have a guy on another board wanting to install a 76 Saginaw 4 speed in his 69 Camaro. He claims he has the correct shifter body and handle, but isn't sure which install kit to use. He was told the 68 kit wouldn't work because it located the shifter out of the correct location. Seems strange to me, since the 68-69 consoles and presumably the hole in the tunnel, are the same. Has anyone done this or know if the 68 install kit will, in fact, be correct for his application??

The 67-68 Camaro Muncie install kit is different then the 69 and locates the shifter in different location.

The 67-68 Camaro Hurst chrome stick is different then the 69 chrome stick but the shifter body is same for 67 68 69.

Hurst does not list a Saginaw install kit for a 69.

a seach should turn up some info and pictures on this

I did a search and came up blank. Today I get my own post......
So the info he got was right, that the 68 install won't work in a 69......interesting, to say the least.
Anyway, do you have a particular thread you were referring to with pics ??

The question is why would he want to use the Saginaw. Unless his car is low horsepower , he will be putting in a Muncie soon.Saginaws don't stand up real well to abuse.

OK69,

I'm the one putting a saginaw in a 69. What i'm trying to figure out is what mounting plate I need to mount the correct 69 shifter to the Saginaw so the stick comes out inside the car in the correct location. Any information you can share about the shifter linkages/components you have installed will be a big help. A picture of your shifter mounting plate would be great but I'm assuming your tranny is "in" the car so this would not be a option.

....to answer your question Bob, I had a 69 years ago with a stout 327 and a sag behind it and never had a problem. It was not installed with the correct shifter when i bought it but it worked so i didn't change it. My 69 now also has a 327 about 300 HP and I would like this car to "look" correct inside. I priced Muncies and for the same money i can have a saginaw in this car and two on the shelf in case one craps out. i'm trying to stay within a budget and my past experience with saginaw was a good one. :-)

Thanks Mitch

the OEM mount plate is easy. It is the same as a 69 Muncie and they make a decent repop or you can get a used one on ebay.

What I am not sure of is if the 76 Saginaw 4 speed has the same tapped holes as the 69 Saginaw. Can you post a picture of your trans?

I measured the distance between the mounting holes:

bottom two holes: 2"
bottom left hole to top middle hole: 2 3/8"
bottom right hole to top middle hole: 2 1/2"

why does it look like only one hole is threaded for the shifter bolts?
Which holes do the 2 long mounting bolts that go through the shifter body thread in to?

The larger bolt goes in the top and the lower bolt goes in the slot with a nut on the back.
The slot allows the shifter to tilt front to back for adjustment
