I have never rebuilt the vacuum actuators for the headlights on a 69 Camaro. Is it better to go electric or rebuild the original vacuum actuators. Is there a Web sight that explains how the best way to do it is??
Thanks... |

X2 And I've heard the repops don't always work. I have new old repops never installed that I bought years ago. When they get put on and don't work I'll go electric.

I have vacuum and DSE electric setup for each car, I would highly recommend electric, they work very nice, its up to you though.
Don't know if I would rebuild the old ones if you can? Jeff G. 69 RS/SS 396 Vert 69 RS/SS 454 Hartop |

somebody in here did rebuild them and had good luck, try searching for him, maybe in the BODY section. The repop's work well. Mine have worked since I got them from Rick's years ago.

Seen the electric actuators in action? door movement (open/shut) is very quick.
I like the slow lumbering door movement vacuum brings, looks more right, more vintage, more cool factor. I'm still running 1 original and 1 repro canister, no problems with either. Just my 2cents, your mileage may vary. |

Go to the electrical section. Go into the elec. basics and scroll down to the thread "electrify your RS doors". In the first post there in BPOE shows how to do this. I made comment about half way down the first page. I mounted mine differently than wwhat they show in the pics. The motors can mount up using 1/4" sq. stock modifiing your bellcranks. They work slick and they also have a manual knob on them incase the motors go out. Also motors can be purchased at the local salvage yard. PM me if you have further questions.

I helped my son install electrics on his 69. We had to cut a lot of metal for the motors. Very little was left to hold the surrounding structure.
Mine has repo vacuum cans. I replaced the last original can a few years ago. The new can didn't work, just the way the old can was acting. Ended up bending the shaft because it was rubbing as it came out of the can. Perfect. (still have the original, probably still good) When the first can died I ordered a new one from Classic Industries. The shaft was too long and the door wouldn't close all the way. I called 'em. They measured others on the shelf. Same thing. Sending mine back would do no good. I asked if the warranty would still be in effect if I shortened the shaft by a 1/4" with my hacksaw. Yes, they said. I did. Perfect to this day. Also the hose diagram color code at the under-hood valve is inverted, as shown ON THIS SITE! They need to be flipped, top and bottom. The middle one is correct. Trust me.

My 68 was cloned into a RS with headlamp doors from a 67 (electric). The motors never worked so installed the retro-electro kit and I am very happy with it. Here is the thread I put together on the install.

I installed Mat's conversion earlier this year, about 1/2 the price of the DSE setup. It uses all GM parts (Firebird/Fiero) and the best part - no cutting or drilling
